Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center on Gamble Street in Davidson has completed renovations that include two new infant classrooms and is now taking applications from families who need full-time infant care. The center plans an open house and dedication for the new program on Thursday, March 21.
The new program is for infants 6 weeks to 12 months. The non-profit, state-license center already serves children ages 12 months to 6 years, and offers an after-school program for ages 6-12. The center has a 5??star
accreditation from the state of North Carolina and offers sliding-scale tuition for families in need.
A renovation that began last fall transformed the center?s administrative and storage areas into two classrooms. Other improvements include two new wheelchair access ramps, replacement of aging doors and windows, and the creation of a much-needed business office and waiting area.
Center director Courtenay O?Neil says the expanded care for newborns will fill a gap in care in the Davidson-Cornelius area. ?We are very excited to be able to offer this added care, especially since so many parents need to return to work soon after the birth of a child. Our aim is to provide the same high quality care for our infants as we do for our pre-school children, so that mothers and fathers can return to work with confidence,? O?Neil said in an announcement Monday.
Lowes Home Improvement?s Charitable and Educational Foundation helped fund the project with a $59,000 grant. Labor came from Hearts & Hammers of Huntersville and Our Towns Habitat for Humanity and other volunteers, under the coordination of the Rev. David Buck, Rector of St. Alban?s Episcopal Church in Davidson.
Christopher Woodhouse, the center?s board chair, said the expansion and the new program were badly need. ?We are thrilled that this expansion will enable us to better serve current families at the center who often must place siblings separately,? Woodhouse said. ?It is essential that working families have options for quality care. The renovation has also enabled us to provide critically needed wheelchair access and updates to a building that was constructed over 40 years ago.?
Tax-deductible donations to support the completion of the building and renovation project may be sent to the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, PO Box 848, Davidson, NC 28036.
