Hiking Adventures And Pointers For The North Georgia Mountains

Most visitors to our area itch to hit the trails and experience hiking in the North Georgia Mountains. Without knowing the region, they mostly rely on information from the Chamber of Commerce, cabin rental companies and the limited signs available. Most of the trails found by any of the above methods will not provide for much of a destination and are certain to be crowded, especially on popular weekends and holidays. Think of it - if the tens of thousands of tourists all get the same information, guess where they will be hiking. In spite of some good information out there, many of our visitors still get lost and are unable to find their trails. Case in point is some of the reviews of some of these destinations, citing being lost and not well-marked trails.

The area is, of course, riddled with hiking trails and picturesque destinations, but knowing these will require some research and some willingness and openness for adventure. In spite of some of the negative feedback by visitors, most trails are well marked (perhaps not in a Disney-ish sense) and can be found easily on maps and on the internet. The following tips will aid you in making your experience unique, exciting and certainly fun for your entire family.

The very first recommendation I would propose is to get a good map that shows local trails - these are available online or for a more complete experience, in most shops throughout the area. Purchasing a map will not only aid you in your quest, but will also provide a great educational platform both for adults and kids alike. One should also obtain all the suggested hiking information from the Chamber of Commerce, and use some of these as your starting point for your research. So, for example, pick the Swinging Bridge - one of the most popular destinations in the area. Your 'tourist' guide will provide directions and offer a very short - only 2/10th of a mile - hike to this amazing suspension bridge over the Toccoa River. Now locate the destination on your map and study it in detail. You will learn that this path is part of the Benton MacKaye Trail system. You will also learn that the swinging bridge is not only accessible from the direction provided in your tourist information package, but can also be reached using different routes and ways, offering a more unique, much less frequented experience. Pull up the web site for the BMT, and read all about some of these different access points. Determine the one most interesting and best suited for your group's fitness level. Make sure you pack enough water and that you dress appropriately for the season and embark on your adventure!

In short, do research and do not be afraid of thinking outside of the box - try the not so frequented path and build memories that will be worth remembering.

One last thought - and I must mention this as this is an issue I face each time I hike - 'pack it is, pack it out'. Alternatively, as quoting the American Indian ten commandments: "Enjoy Life's Journey, But Leave No Tracks." So please do not leave candy wrappers, cigarette butts or empty water bottles. Take these back home with you to dispose of in a responsible way. You will be happier to know that you not only experienced a great hike, but also did not disturb Nature.

The Lilly Pad Village - North Georgia's premier destination for family fun. Enjoy gem mining, mini golf, fishing and guided hikes in a picturesque mountain setting.

Longterm Engagement Can Lead to Longterm Problems | Chocolate ...

So with the TV series of ?Marrying the Game? ending, I started thinking about long-term engagements and I wondered why people stay engaged for long periods of time. No one should rush to propose but once you?re engaged, why lag?

The average engagement period in this country is between 1-1 1/2 years. What in the world takes so long to tie the knot? Sure, your dream wedding venue might be booked, you need to save money or other things come up but really ? a year and a half engagement? It seems to me that the longer you take to plan the wedding, the more expensive it becomes. I know from personal experience the more time you give me to plan an event, the more things I?ll find to spend money on. Anyone who is engaged for longer than a year must not want to get married. If you are spending more time fussing over having the perfect venue or the cost of the wedding, than you are focusing on the wrong things.

But getting back to my point?on the television show ?Marrying the Game?, the couple Tiffney and Jayceon were engaged to be married after dating on & off for 8 years. On the show, there were some issues that Tiffney felt needed to be addressed before walking down the aisle but at the end of the series the future of their relationship was unclear. It?s one thing to date for years & years on end but after breaking off an engagement there is no point in maintaining that relationship even with the purpose of ?working on things?. Why call off an engagement unless you?re ready to call off the relationship?? Even if you think that your situation will change with time, people don?t change.

I think that long term engagements are ridiculous: Are you really hoping that your relationship will improve because you?ve changed the date of your wedding?

Falcons lead Lions 21-16 early in 4th quarter.

DETROIT (AP) ? Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes, two to Roddy White, and Atlanta's defense made some key plays to help the Falcons lead the Detroit Lions 21-16 early in the fourth quarter Saturday night.

Atlanta is a win away from earning home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

The Lions have only pride ? and personal records ? at stake after losing six straight.

Calvin Johnson began the night 182 yards receiving away from breaking Jerry Rice's NFL single-season mark of 1,848 yards receiving set in 1995 with the San Francisco 49ers.

Johnson was 4 yards away from Rice's record when Detroit kicked a field goal early in the fourth quarter to cut its deficit to five points.

Ryan went deep to White for the first score, connecting with him on a 44-yard TD strike with 5:50 left in the first quarter. Ryan threw a short pass to him early in the second quarter and the standout receiver did the rest on a 39-yard sprint down the sideline.

Ryan put his third TD pass where only Julio Jones could catch it a corner of the end zone, and he did on a 16-yard reception that put Atlanta up 21-3.

Detroit didn't give up, a game after being accused of doing just that in a 38-10 loss at Arizona.

Jason Hanson kicked a second field goal late in the first half to make the score 21-6.

After Atlanta opened the second half with a three-and-out drive, Mikel Leshoure scored on a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter to pull the Lions with eight points.

Matthew Stafford connected with Johnson on 26- and 21-yard passes during the drive that ended with Hanson's third field goal that made it 21-16.

Detroit dug a big hole because the Falcons scored two TDs off turnovers in the first half.

Defensive end Kroy Biermann forced running Leshoure to fumble, giving the Falcons the ball at their 31 and they took advantage. Ryan's perfectly lofted pass to White's fingertips converted a third-and-1 in a big way, putting the Falcons ahead.

The Lions responded with another drive into Atlanta territory, but stalled and had to settle for Hanson's 34-yard field goal in the final minute of the opening quarter to pull within four points.

Atlanta earned a double-digit lead on the ensuing drive.

Ryan threw a screen pass to his left to White, who got a great block from tight end Tony Gonzalez, and the receiver raced untouched for a score that put the Falcons ahead 14-3.

Detroit's Calvin Johnson, who had a record-breaking game, fumbled when defensive end John Abraham ripped the football out of his hands.

Ryan completed his first 12 attempts and after his first incomplete pass, he converted a third-and-10 with an 11-yard toss to Jacquizz Rodgers. Two plays later, Ryan matched a season high with a third TD pass on the connection with Jones. Prior to the game, Ryan hadn't started a game with more than 10 consecutive completions, according to STATS LLC. He started 10 for 10 last month against Tampa Bay.

Johnson had three receptions for 70 yards in the first quarter, breaking Herman Moore's single-season franchise record for yards receiving and putting him closer to one of Rice's NFL records.

By halftime, Johnson had 117 yards receiving. He had 100 yards receiving for an eighth straight game, breaking a record set by Charley Hennigan in 1961 and matched by Michael Irvin in 1995. It was Johnson's 11th game with 100 yards receiving this season, tying Irvin's NFL mark.

The Lions went right to Johnson on their first snap, but he gained just 3 yards on the three-and-out drive. The Falcons drove to the Detroit 45 the first time they had the ball, but punted on a fourth-and-2.

Stafford connected with Johnson on a short crossing route and the receiver did the rest, outrunning Falcons on a 49-yard gain. Fittingly, the Lions turned the ball over on the next snap in the latest lowlight in a season full of them.

The Lions, Falcons and fans at Ford Field in Detroit honored the victims of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School before the game. Players had memorial decals on their helmets that read "S.H.E.S." in white on a black background, and Detroit's coaches wore pins with a similar design. There was also a moment of silence before the national anthem while the names and ages of each victim were shown on the videoboards. Twenty children and six adults were killed in the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn. Adam Lanza killed his mother, shot students and staff, then killed himself.

10 Ways to Improve Your Home Office With Feng Shui

Guest post by Amy Wettig

source: amywettig.com

Let?s talk about what your home office is all about according to Feng Shui.

Your office represents your career goals and your potential for success. A well-organized office can lead to increased productivity, while office clutter can muddy your goals or cause obstacles that may block your success.

Office clutter represents confusion about money matters. It can also signify obstacles that may be causing difficulties with clients, coworkers, and colleagues.

Consider these Feng Shui tips for your home office:

1. Put your desk in the command position. Position your desk so that you can see the door easily when seated. You do not want your back to the door. If you cannot position your desk so that you can see the entrance to your office while seated, hang a mirror on the wall so that it reflects the doorway.

2. Clean out your file cabinets regularly. If you let old business papers fill your file cabinets, you may prevent new business from coming your way. Remove paperwork that?s no longer current. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 1/3 of your file cabinets empty to indicate that you are ready to receive new business.

3. Use wooden furniture to encourage expansion. In the Chinese elemental system, wood is linked with growth. If you use wooden furniture, your business or finances should increase.

4. Fix or replace damaged office equipment. Broken furniture symbolizes broken deals or promises, damaged relationships with customers or suppliers, and other problems. These are the exact kinds of things you do not want. Repair these things promptly to keep your business running smoothly.

5. Use a black phone to encourage prosperous communication with colleagues and customers. Black is associated with wealth in China and it is a water color which emphasizes qualities such as flexibility and cooperation. Using a black phone can help stimulate business and prosperity, especially if your work involves a lot of phone contact.

6. Use white in your decorating scheme to promote stability & structure.

7. Paint your office door red or green.?Red is the Chinese color of luck. Green is the color of money and can increase prosperity. In some countries, it?s believed that you can attract money to you by painting your door green.

8. Consider options other than paint. If you can?t paint the door, tie a red ribbon around your office doorknob to help attract good luck to you and your business.

9. Rearrange your office furniture periodically. This will encourage new business and stimulate new opportunities in your work life. Once a year may be often enough unless you find yourself getting into a rut. By changing your interior, you?ll change things in the outer world too.

10. Add live plants to your home office. Plants symbolize growth and life. In some countries, their green foliage represents the color of money. Place one or more healthy plants in your office to encourage the growth and prosperity of your business.

The First Text Message Was Sent 20 Years Ago Today

On December 3rd 1992, a 22-year-old Canadian test engineer sat down and typed out a very simple message, "Merry Christmas." It flew over the Vodafone network to the phone of one Richard Jarvis, and since then, we just haven't been able to stop texting. More »

Iran says blogger who died in custody was beaten

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state prosecutor has confirmed for the first time that a blogger who died in police custody last month had been beaten.

Prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi told reporters Monday that an investigation into the death of Sattar Beheshti has found that he was beaten from the day of his arrest.

Ejehi said the beatings were not the cause of death, which most likely came from physical or psychological shock. The comments were reported by the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

The confirmation comes two days after Iran's police fired the head of the Tehran cybercrimes unit over the case.

According to Iranian officials, Beheshti was detained Oct. 30 for alleged "cybercrimes" and was imprisoned and interrogated the next day. Beheshti died Nov. 3, and wounds were found on his body.

Kuwait boycott bloc hails lower voter turnout

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Opposition groups in Kuwait hailed their election boycott as a success Sunday after officials said voter turnout on Saturday was sharply lower than during the last parliamentary races earlier this year.

Kuwait's Ministry of Information said 40.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. That compares with nearly 60 percent in the February elections.

As expected, the results point to a solidly pro-government chamber. Three women are among the new 50-seat parliament, which is expected to hold its first session within two weeks after the end of procedural issues to name a new government.

A wide-reaching opposition coalition, including conservative Islamists and Western-leaning liberals, boycotted the vote to protest alleged power abuses by the ruling family. They have vowed to press ahead with street demonstrations despite a ban on major political gatherings in public.

Kuwait's parliament is the most politically powerful among the Gulf Arab states, but the ruling establishment controls all key government posts and policies.

Fracking extent report dismissed

The energy department has dismissed a report that "60% of the UK countryside could be exploited" for fracking, the controversial gas extraction method.

The Independent reported that more than 32,000 square miles could be affected, notably in south, north-west and north-east England and central Scotland.

It said it based this on official maps, but the department called the 60% figure "nonsense".

Meanwhile, an anti-fracking protest will be held in London later.

The process of fracking involves pumping water and chemicals into shale rock at high pressure to extract gas.

It was temporarily banned after it was blamed for two earthquakes in Lancashire in 2011, but according to the Independent, Energy Secretary Ed Davey will soon end the moratorium.

Responding to the Independent's article, a department spokesman said: "There is a big difference between the amount of shale gas that might exist and what can be technically and commercially extracted.

"It is too early to assess the potential for shale gas but the suggestion more than 60% of the UK countryside could be exploited is nonsense.

The potential for shale gas to bring down bills is overhyped, while experts agree local opposition is a serious threat to the industry's viability.?

End Quote John Sauven Greenpeace

"We have commissioned the British Geological Survey to do an assessment of the UK's shale gas resources, which will report its findings next year."

'England's heartland'

The government is currently considering a report by an independent panel of experts published in April on the future of fracking in the UK.

The report recommended fracking should continue, but under stricter regulations.

Environmental campaign group Greenpeace has said its own analysis shows the extent of potential shale sites is widespread.

Executive director John Sauven said: "Two thirds of England, including large swathes of countryside, is now under active consideration for a risky, polluting, expensive form of fossil fuel extraction.

"The potential for shale gas to bring down bills is overhyped, while experts agree local opposition is a serious threat to the industry's viability.

"The coalition bust-up over wind energy will pale in comparison to the political spats that are likely to occur if [Chancellor] George Osborne tries to push ahead with gas fracking in the heartlands of England's countryside."

Imitation rig

Later in London, protesters will hold a protest against fracking in the UK.

They are expected to attempt to build an imitation 23ft (7m) "fracking rig" outside Parliament, and also a mock pipeline in Grosvenor Square from the Canadian High Commission to the US embassy as a sign of their "outrage at the continued exploitation of high-carbon tar sands," lobby group Campaign Against Climate Change said.

They also plan to deliver a letter to Downing Street, calling for a ban on exploration and development of shale gas and coal bed method.

"In an effort to step up the focus of attention on this harmful technique and its effect on people, landscape and ecosystems in Britain, residents of Sussex, Falkirk, Belfast, the Fylde, the Ribble Estuary and the Vale of Glamorgan have come together as a UK-wide deputation to ask for action, not words, on this crucial subject," the group, Britain & Ireland Frack Free, said in a statement.

Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to pre-order: $1,450 for high-res, high framerate home viewing

Redray 4K Cinema Player is ready to preorder, $1,450 for highres, framerate at home

We got a peek at Red's Redray 4K Cinema Player and Projector back in April at NAB, but now you can bring the player portion of it to your own home very soon. You'll need to bring your own 4K Ultra HD display but for $1,450 you can pre-order a unit capable of native 4,096 × 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160 video playback (in .RED file format) and upscaling. It connects to 4K displays via one HDMI 1.4 port or 4 HDMI 1.3 ports, with an additional HDMI jack needed to push 7.1 audio. It's even ready for the new high framerate 3D video that we'll see debut at theaters with The Hobbit. There's no mention of the Red Laser Projector yet, so you'll have to BYO 4K display, which right now would probably mean something by LG or Sony.

To get content home Red is also launching its nationwide fiber-based Odemax.com over-the-top distribution network. Red co-owner Jarred Land calls it the "only comprehensive distribution solution for 4K," with built-in DRM, sales and analytics tools. He goes on to say that the Redray player will begin shipping at the end of December, with volume shipping promised in Q1 2013. A new RRencoder plugin for the Redcine-X viewer will launch in mid-December for converting external footage to the .RED format, and finally Odemax is scheduled to come online in January in time for the Sundance film festival. Check for more details after the break, plus a few more pics and a press release with all the specs.

Boycott-hit voting begins in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Deeply divided Kuwait opened polling stations Saturday to pick a new parliament that's certain to side with the ruling establishment after a widespread election boycott by opposition groups.

The voting underscored the deepening tensions in the strategic Gulf nation, a major oil producer and hub for U.S. ground forces as part of the Pentagon's military counterweight to Iran.

Opposition groups ? ranging from hardline Islamists to Western-leaning liberals ? have already called the new parliament illegitimate because of the boycott and could increasingly shift their protests to the streets against Kuwait's ruling family.

The anti-government groups have bitterly denounced a decree in October by Kuwait's emir to end an unusual balloting system that allowed four choices per voter.

Critics claim the new one-vote-per-person rule will make it easier for state authorities to potentially influence the outcome. On the eve of the election, more than 15,000 people joined a peaceful pro-boycott march in the first rally permitted by authorities since a ruling last month banning gatherings of more than 20 people.

Security forces watched over polling stations, but there were no immediate indications of unrest or boycott supporters trying to disrupt the voting. Some opposition groups predict turnout could be well below 50 percent.

Kuwait has the Gulf's most political powerfully parliament, which was in the hands of Islamists and their allies earlier this year before the courts dissolved it over a legal challenge by the ruling establishment over electoral districts.

The country also has some of the widest political and media freedoms among the Gulf Arab states, but key government posts and policies remain under the control of the ruling family.

The region's popular uprisings have not spilled over to Kuwait in a major way as in nearby Bahrain, and it remains unlikely opposition groups would wage an all-out challenge to the current system and risk losing the generous cradle-to-grave benefits provided by the state.

But clashes last month between protesters and security forces displayed the potential for violence to escalate.

Kuwait also has been hit by a wave of labor unrest and strikes earlier this year, including walkouts that grounded the state carrier, Kuwait Airways, and temporarily closed customs posts and left several hundred trucks stranded at the border.

Calls for better working conditions have grown louder in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings. Kuwaitis are used to well-paid government jobs and benefits that increasingly have become a burden on state finances despite the country's huge oil wealth.

Mustache transplants on the rise in Middle East

A mustache is a symbol of power and respect in some parts of the world. (KREM.com)Movember is coming to a close in the U.S., but men in the Middle East are reportedly seeking out mustache transplants in order to give their facial hair a thicker and fuller appearance.

"For some men who look young and junior, they think (a mustache) is a must to look senior ... more professional and wise," Turkish plastic surgeon Selahattin Tulunay told CNN. "They think it is prestigious."

Tulunay says he now performs 50 to 60 mustache implants per month on patients who largely hail from the Middle East and travel to his country as "medical tourists."

Several other surgeons told CNN they have seen an increasing number of patients seeking the procedure, with most patients ranging in age from 30 to 50.

The procedure is known as follicular unit extraction and involves removing follicles from areas of the body with dense hair growth and implanting them in the desired mustache area.

Altogether, the outpatient procedure costs about $7,000.

Tulunay tells CNN that his patients often request mustache styles worn by celebrities or historical figures. "They have some celebrities as role models," he said, saying Turkish singer and actor Ibrahim Tatlises is a favorite.

In the U.S. the mustache is taken somewhat less seriously. Groucho Marx was recently voted as having America's favorite facial hair.

In May, an Indian man was recognized by Guinness World Records as having the world's longest mustache at 14 feet.

The mustache is a fixture of the Arab world, dating to the Ottoman Empire. And there have been recent examples of the mustache playing a role in power politics. In 2008 the Jerusalem Post reported that Gaza militants shaved the mustache off a Fatah rival they had abducted

(AP) ? Billboard named Katy Perry its woman of the year, but the pop star thought her year was 2011.

"I felt like my year was last year ... I thought my moment had passed," Perry said in an interview with Jon Stewart at Billboard's Women in Music event Friday in New York City.

Perry released "Teenage Dream" in 2010, and the double platinum album sparked five No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that spilled over to 2011. She tied the record Michael Jackson set with "Thriller" for most hits from a single album.

She re-released the album this year, which launched two more hits and a top-grossing 3-D film.

Perry thanked her fans, who stood outside of Capitale hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

"I don't really like to call myself a role model for my fans, but I hope I'm an inspiration, especially for young women," she said when she accepted the honor.

Perry also thanked her mom at the event, which honored women who work in the music industry.

In like fashion, newcomer Carly Rae Jepsen also thanked her mom ? and stepmom ? when accepting the rising star honor. The "Call Me Maybe" singer said she's happy and surprised by her success.

"It was sort of the key to unlocking the rest of the world for me and was something that none of us were expecting," she said, in an interview, of her viral hit.

British singer Cher Lloyd performed Perry's "E.T." at the luncheon, which also featured a performance from rising country singer Hunter Hayes.

Perry, who wore a fitted pink dress, joked about recording a follow-up to "Teenage Dream."

"Have you heard it? I haven't," the smiling singer said on the red carpet.

(AP) ? After a yearlong inquiry full of sensational testimony, Britain's Lord Justice Brian Leveson released a report Thursday into the culture and practices of the British press and his recommendations for future regulation to prevent phone hacking, data theft, bribery and other abuses.

The long-simmering scandal has already led to scores of arrests and some criminal charges. Dozens of cases have been settled out of court after victims of press intrusion sued. Here are some of the cases the Leveson inquiry has investigated:

MILLY DOWLER

The 13-year-old girl was abducted and murdered in 2002. In July 2011, it was reported that employees of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid had hacked into her telephone while police were still searching for her, giving her parents false hope that she was alive. Her mother, Sally Dowler, told the inquiry that when she could again leave a message on her missing daughter's phone, she shouted: "She's picked up the voice mails! ... She's alive!" Outrage over this case prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to commission the Leveson inquiry.

KATE and GERRY McCANN

Their young daughter Madeleine had vanished during a vacation in Portugal. The parents said newspapers were sympathetic at first but coverage later turned hostile. One story said the couple had sold their daughter into slavery, another that they had killed her and hid her body in a freezer. The couple successfully sued several British newspapers over suggestions that they had caused their daughter's death and then covered it up. Kate McCann described her dismay when extracts from her private diary ? in which she wrote to her missing daughter ? appeared in the News of the World in 2008. "I felt totally violated," she said. "There was absolutely no respect shown to me as a grieving mother or as a human being, or to my daughter."

HUGH GRANT

The popular actor testified that since "Four Weddings and a Funeral" made him a movie star, details of his hospital visits had been leaked, his garbage was rifled through, his ex-girlfriend and his infant daughter harassed. He said an article earlier this year in The Sun and the Daily Express about his visit to a hospital emergency room was a gross intrusion of privacy. "I think no one would expect their medical records to be made public or to be appropriated by newspapers for commercial profit. That is fundamental to our British sense of decency," he said.

J.K. ROWLING

The best-selling author of the Harry Potter series said she was completely unprepared for the tsunami of media attention when the first of her books became a sensational success. "It feels threatening to have people watching you," she said. Rowling said she had tried to keep her three children out of the media glare and was outraged when her eldest daughter came home from primary school with a letter from a journalist in her backpack. "I felt such a sense of invasion," she said.

CHARLOTTE CHURCH

A singer who became a star as a teenager, Church said she had been asked to perform at Rupert Murdoch's wedding to Wendi Deng and was offered either a $100,000 fee or a promise of favorable treatment from his newspapers. She took the latter but was hounded anyway. "In fact, Mr. Murdoch's newspapers have since been some of the worst offenders," she said. Between the ages of 16 and 20, Church said photographers were frequently stationed around the clock outside her home. Church said that she was repeatedly chased in her car and suffered "the indignity of paparazzi trying to take photographs up my skirt and down my top."

CHARLOTTE HARRIS

A lawyer who represented several people who claimed to be hacking victims, Harris testified that she was a victim of "highly intrusive" surveillance by newspapers. The purpose, she said, "was to obtain information which could be made public in the hope of putting pressure on me, presumably to deter me and my clients from pursuing claims against the company."

A 3-D Optogenetics Chip Developed At The MIT Media Lab Promises Better Control Of The Brain

Technology Review:

Optogenetics, which pairs light-sensitive genes with a light source to selectively switch brain cells on or off, has shown promise as a research tool and a potential therapy. But the technology mostly delivers light to one spot, whereas brain activity usually involves complex sequences of activation in different locations. A new device takes optogenetics into three dimensions, with the ability to send patterns of light to neurons at various co?rdinates in the brain.

Balloon test shows space tourism on horizon

23 hrs.

Not all space tourism is rocket science. A newly successful test of a balloon could allow paying human customers to enjoy stunning Earth views and the weightless astronaut experience by 2014.?

The test balloon carried a humanoid robot up to an altitude of almost 20 miles (32 kilometers) on Nov. 12 ? just a few miles shy of where skydiver Felix Baumgartner leaped from during his "space dive" in October. Startup Zero 2 Infinity wants to eventually offer hours of flight time for space tourists to do whatever they want in a near-space environment.?

"Some people will want to tweet," said Jose Mariano Lopez-Urdiales, founder and CEO of Zero 2 Infinity. "Some will want to put down a carpet and pray to mecca. Some people will want to eat their favorite buffalo wings while they're up there."

Video: Near-space balloon soars in flight test

The Spanish company already has customers on its wait list?who paid an early deposit of almost $13,000 (10,000 euros) as the first installment out of a total ticket price of $143,000 (110,000 euros). It has also attracted funding from the world's second-largest balloon manufacturer, Spain's third-largest bank, and several angel investors by proving its concept step-by-step and by relying on proven helium balloon technologies.?

Flight testing took place at an Air Force base near Virgen del Camino in Spain. But Lopez-Urdiales envisions future flights launching from many other locations in the country.?

The balloon experience?
A typical predawn flight would take several hours to reach maximum altitude, so that passengers could enjoy seeing the sun rise against the blackness of space and see the curvature of the planet Earth. Luckily, the balloon would not need to get anywhere near the 62-mile (100 km) altitude that marks the official edge of space for its riders to enjoy stellar views.?

"You would spend two hours at the floating altitude of 36 kilometers (22 miles)," Lopez-Urdiales told TechNewsDaily. "We could do it higher, but it would not make any difference, because you already see the same visual cues at 39 kilometers or even 100 kilometers."?

Getting back down would mean cutting the cord between the balloon and the enclosed passenger capsule. Passengers could experience about 40 to 60 seconds of weightlessness during free fall, before parachutes and a parafoil carried them safely down to Earth.?

The recent test flight gave Zero 2 Infinity its first successful test of a balloon capsule large enough to carry humans, but only if the two people spent the entire trip lying down. An earlier flight test scheduled in May was canceled after?wind gusts damaged the test balloon.?

Robot test pilots?
Future versions of the balloons, called "bloons" by the company, would have donut- or bagel-shaped capsules with plenty of standing room for two pilots and four passengers. But the test capsule proved just right for the humanoid robot named Nao ? made by Aldebaran Robotics ? that stands at knee-height compared to adult humans.?

The robot rode as a passive passenger, but could someday become an active pilot that tests the controls and life-support technologies meant for humans.?

"Little by little, we're teaching it how to pilot, but that's at a very early stage," Lopez-Urdiales explained. "The idea in the future is to have?humanoid robots?testing future complex aerospace vehicles."?

The company has almost finished building a bigger test balloon that could comfortably carry two people standing up. That larger balloon could make an attempt at breaking the manned high-altitude balloon record set in the 1960s ? a record that requires the pilot to take off and land in the balloon. (Space diver Baumgartner intentionally disqualified himself by leaping out of his high-flying balloon.)?

The inner journey?
But Zero 2 Infinity doesn't just want to make money. Lopez-Urdiales envisions his balloons carrying scientific experiments or scientists high into Earth's atmosphere. His inspiration for creating the startup company came from his dad, an astrophysicist who worked on an experiment that went with the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn's moon Titan.?

"I was growing up around balloons, rockets and telescopes," Lopez-Urdiales said. "My dad tested a Huygens scientific instrument on a high-altitude balloon."?

The balloon space tourism's relatively more affordable price tag could also open the eyes of many more people through the "overview effect," Lopez-Urdiales said. Frank White, a communications director at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, coined the term to describe how astronauts gained a better appreciation of global and environmental issues after seeing the Earth surrounded by the darkness of space.?

"That's probably the biggest benefit?private spaceflight?will offer to civilians and members of the public," Lopez-Urdiales said. "The overview effect is personal experience, but then you share it. I think it goes a much longer way than bragging rights."?

Bob Marshall: Virginia GOP Pressures Me '7 Days A Week' To Drop Anti-Abortion Agenda

Virginia Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William), the author of the state's fetal personhood bill, says he has always been a bit of a thorn in the side of the mainstream Republican Party. But since the 2012 election, he said, the party is "more overtly gun-shy" about dealing with abortion, and the pressure from GOP leadership to back off of his socially conservative agenda is constant.

"It doesn't happen more than seven days a week, 52 weeks a year," he told The Huffington Post sarcastically in an interview. "Through committee assignments, being shoved aside ... I've had to deal with things the hard way."

He added, "The Republican consultants have advised ducking these social issues for years. The social conservatives don't get any credit when they help Republicans win, but they get blamed by the consultant class when they lose."

Marshall was dealt a blow this weekend when state Sen. Steve Martin (R), chairman of the Senate Health Committee, told The Washington Examiner that he was letting Marshall's controversial personhood bill die without a full vote. The bill passed the House earlier this year with the backing of Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and passed out of the Senate Health Committee.

The full Senate voted to continue the bill into the next legislative session, but state Sen. Harry Blevins (R-Chesapeake), the swing vote on personhood in the Health Committee, has since revoked his support for the measure. Martin told the Washington Examiner that if he had the eight votes he needed to pass the personhood bill out of committee, he would be happy to do it, but he doesn't want to waste taxpayer money by working on a bill that has no chance of passing. "There might be less of an appetite [for social bills], and I want to take up the bills that we can get passed," he said.

Marshall said he believes GOP leadership is deliberately using committee assignments to "set this pro-life legislation up for failure."

"When I saw that Harry Blevins was the swing vote, I said, 'That's the kiss of death right there,'" he said. "It's very clear, when you put someone who's a known switch-hitter on a committee, you know what you're doing."

Although a majority of Virginians voted for President Barack Obama this time around, Marshall said he does not believe his constituents were rejecting his social agenda. He thinks Mitt Romney was not principled enough on social issues to inspire the conservative base. "I'm not saying I could have found a better candidate, but this is the second time the Republican establishment has had their way and the second time their candidate has lost," he said. "We had to whisper, '[Romney] will be for us in these instances.' There is no champion who says, 'This is what I believe and why I believe it.' We have to do it in the closet, and that is not gonna cut it."

Marshall strongly opposes abortion (in all circumstances), same-sex marriage, funding for Planned Parenthood and the insurance coverage of contraception. If the Republican establishment continues to reject the bills he writes, he said, he will use backdoor methods to advance his legislation. He said he is "always looking for bills to amend" with abortion-related stipulations in order to force members to go on record in support or opposition.

"For example, I might amend a bill that deals with life insurance to say the child killed in utero should be recognized as a legal person," he said. "Just put that in there and stipulate it. I've seen massive shifts on lobbying and delegates pulling their bills because they know I'll amend them and that I know how to do it in a germane way."

Members of Congress have frequently used this legislative tactic to pass controversial measures. U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) tried to attach a fetal personhood amendment to a federal flood insurance bill earlier this year, and Sen. Roy Blount (R-Mo.) attached an amendment relating to contraception to a Senate transportation bill in February.

Marshall said it doesn't bother him that his anti-abortion amendments might kill or stall an important bill that would otherwise pass, because in his opinion, no matter could be more important than ending abortion. "You're talking about human beings being killed," he said. "What higher considerations do I put out there?"
