Deadly storm dumps snow in North, rain in South

Hurricane force winds blew into Texas creating a 'historic' blizzard and whiteout conditions in the Texas-Oklahoma panhandle. Kansas also saw its share of snow as the storm blew north, and blizzard warnings are in effect. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

By Ian Johnston and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

A powerful winter storm continued to hit much of the country Tuesday, with heavy snow spreading from the Plains to the Great Lakes and severe thunderstorms possible in the South, forecasters warned.

The National Weather Service said the storm would ?continue to bring a variety of hazards? to the affected areas. Winds have been gusting up to hurricane strength, with 84 mph recorded at El Paso, Texas.

The storm was blamed for at least two deaths on Monday: Heavy snow caused a roof of a house in Woodward, Okla., to collapse, killing one person inside, and in northwest Kansas, a 21-year-old man was killed when his SUV overturned on an icy patch of Interstate 70. A third death was reported on Tuesday, after a female passenger died in a pickup truck accident on an icy strip of road overnight. Three others were injured in the accident.

?We have roofs collapsing all over town,? Woodward Mayor Roscoe Hill, Jr., told Reuters. ?We really have a mess on our hands.?

The storm brought the February total in Wichita, Kansas, to 21 inches, breaking a 100-year-old record for the month, NBC station KSN reported. A KSN reporter was covering the storm when a building collapsed under the weight of snow.?

Authorities pleaded with people to stay off the roads because of what Weather Channel meteorologist Greg Postel described as a ?really nasty blizzard.?

The NWS said that heavy snow would spread from the Plains to the Great Lakes, with ?blizzard conditions possible through early Tuesday.?

?On the south side of the storm system, severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are possible across portions of the Gulf Coast and Southeast,? it added.

Severe thunderstorms and the threat of heavy rainfall remained possible over sections of the southeastern states and the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, the NWS said, as the south side of the storm system moved through the area.

A waterspout came ashore in Tampa, Fla., damaging a Westin hotel, WTSP reported. Winds of 90 mph were reported in Cedar Key, and trees and power lines were down.?

Charleston, S.C., broke its record for rain for the month with 10.46 inches -- and more was falling.?

In a storm summary message posted at 4 a.m. ET, the weather service said blizzard warnings were in effect for parts of central northern Oklahoma with storm watches and warnings in effect for some places from central Oklahoma into the southern Great Lakes.

In Chicago, the wintry mix could affect voter turnout in the special primary to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., in the Illinois 2nd District. As much as five inches of slushy snow was expected in the city?s southern suburbs, and a storm watch has been issued for the northern part of the state.

Drivers attempt to deal with tricky conditions on the I-40 service road Monday after a blizzard blasted Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle.

Storm watches and warnings were also in effect for portions of the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states, while ice storm warnings and freezing rain advisories were in effect for parts of West Virginia.

The NWS warned of high winds in the Appalachians in Tennessee, North Carolina and southern Virginia.

In Texas, residents discovered that even their snowdrifts are bigger as they began to dig out from a whopping 19 inches of snow in Amarillo that stranded as many as 100 motorists in the Panhandle and caused Gov. Rick Perry called out military forces.

Farther south, there were flood and flash-flood warnings and watches for ?much of the Gulf Coast and southeast U.S. from Louisiana to Georgia.?

Flood watches were also in effect for parts of the mid-Atlantic Region, the NWS notice added, as rain was expected throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area on Tuesday. The mix of rain and wind was expected to begin by noon, picking up through?the later part of the day. Meteorologists warned people should expect more rain than sleet as temperatures were likely to remain above freezing. The rain should move out of the area by Wednesday morning, and might yield to sunny skies later in the afternoon.

Commuters in New York City and the tri-state area should also expect to see a late-afternoon cocktail of rain, sleet, and snow. The worst of the storm was likely to hit overnight, though morning commuters might also catch the tail of the storm on Wednesday, forecasters said. As much as six inches of snow could accumulate at higher elevations inland.

UNC responds to sex assault retaliation charges

"The Carolina community cares deeply about all of our students, including both students in this specific matter," UNC chancellor Holden Thorpe said in a statement released late Tuesday. "If we are to achieve the ultimate goal of eliminating sexual assault and violence from this campus, we must all work together.?

The university released its own statement after several media outlets (including Yahoo! News) reported that Landen Gambill?a sophomore who last spring reported being raped by a student she says is still on the school's Chapel Hill campus?was recently notified of the charge by the UNC Honor Court.

If found guilty, Gambill faces a range of sanctions, including probation, suspension or even expulsion.

Last month, a group of current and former UNC students including Gambill and Melinda Manning?the school's former assistant dean of students?filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, alleging that school officials had pressured Manning into underreporting sex offense cases.

The University?s Honor System has been the subject of Internet commentary and media attention and some of its student members have received threats to their personal safety. Sexual assault evokes passionate responses and concerns. But it is important, particularly in a higher education community, to avoid judgment based upon speculation.

Here are facts. This University works hard to encourage students to come forward and report instances of sexual violence. No student has ever been disciplined for reporting a sexual assault or any Honor Code violation. Further, no University administrator filed or encouraged the filing of charges in this case; there is no retaliation by the University.

Because of concern for our students and their privacy we cannot discuss specifics of this or any student Honor Court case. This includes allegations involving a student who has made a claim about a fellow student.

The University has a long and cherished tradition of student government, led by students for the benefits and welfare of students. We can tell you that the Student Attorneys General, and for many years have had, the authority to decide which cases to consider independent of administrators. Further, administrators may not encourage or prevent the Student Attorneys General from filing charges. When a member of the University community reports an Honor Code violation, the Student Attorneys General determine if the evidence warrants a hearing before the Honor Court under campus policies and procedures. In deciding to charge a student with an alleged violation, the Student Attorneys General carefully consider all available evidence. Because of faculty interest in strengthening the Honor System process, the University established?with Chancellor Thorp?s support?a faculty advisory committee to be available to the Student Attorneys General for consultation in difficult cases.

Throughout a student?s involvement with the student-led Honor System, an accused student receives a number of procedural rights, including the presumption of innocence, the presentation of evidence, and a fair and impartial hearing. After the hearing, if a student is found guilty of the charge, sanctioning decisions are made by the Honor Court after a thorough consideration of all of the evidence.

The Student Attorneys General, who have been involved with the Honor System for over two years, have been trained on making appropriate charge decisions in accordance with University procedures. We are confident in our students? professionalism and commitment.

In January, the University retained Gina Smith, a nationally recognized lawyer and consultant on sexual misconduct issues, to help guide an open and transparent conversation about how the issue of sexual assault affects the campus and culture that is focusing on education and engagement. Smith, a former prosecutor, educator and consultant, has guided other campuses including Amherst on issues related to handling sexual assault complaints.

The work ahead of us is hard and the responsibility to get it right is daunting. We are committed to eliminating sexual assault and violence from our community. We encourage you to visit our website (http://campusconversation.web.unc.edu/) and to participate in the University?s efforts to engage students, faculty, staff and alumni on these issues.

Survey: Most Developers Now Prefer HTML5 For Cross-Platform Development

HTML5_vs._Hybrid_vs._NativeAccording to a new survey commissioned by Telerik’s Kendo UI, the majority of developers now prefer to work with HTML5 instead of native apps for their cross-platform development. Half of the 5,000 developers surveyed in the company’s 2013 Global Developer Survey also said that they developed apps using HTML5 in 2012 and 90% of them plan to do so in 2013. Only 15% of developers said they would prefer to use a native-only approach. The idea behind the survey, Kendo UI’s VP of the company’s HTML5 web and mobile division Todd Anglin told me last week, was to understand how developers are working with HTML5 and what kinds of apps they are developing. The company, however, also looked at the larger HTML5 ecosystem and found, for example, that most developers said they were interested in developing for Windows 8 (66%) – something Microsoft will likely be happy to hear – and ChromeOS (47%), but weren’t all that interested in Blackberry 10 (13%) and Tizen (8%). It’s worth noting that this preference doesn’t always result in actual products getting shipped. Many of these developers are probably working for larger corporations that don’t give them the flexibility to develop in the languages they would like to. Kendo UI surveyed about 5,000 developers from around the world for this survey over the course of January 2013. Most of the developers worked for small and medium businesses (51%) , 29% worked for startups and 20% for enterprises. Given that these developers were likely already interested in HTML5 before they took the survey, chances are the results are somewhat biased toward HTML5. Interestingly, the developers surveyed by Kendo UI also said that Blackberry and iOS are the most?difficult?platforms to develop for. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 ranked as the easiest with Android falling in the middle. As Anglin noted, the reason for this could be the fact that developers can use HTML5 to write apps for the Windows platforms, but also that Microsoft provides a very robust set of tools for its developer ecosystem. As for the kinds of HTML5 apps developers are working on, the survey found a clear emphasis on productivity apps (54%) and utilities (38%). Entertainment, lifestyle, travel apps and games ranked at the bottom of the list. Given these results, it’s no surprise that most developers also told the researchers that they thought the most important modern web technologies right

Intel takes big step in chip foundry business

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp has agreed to make chips on behalf of Altera, a significant step toward opening its prized manufacturing technology to customers on a larger scale, potentially including Apple.

Sharing its manufacturing plants, or fabs, to strategic customers could help the world's top chipmaker offset the growing costs of developing new technology and help keep the plants running near capacity as Intel's traditional PC business loses steam.

Intel will make Altera's programmable chips using its upcoming 14 nanometer trigate transistor technology, the most notable agreement of its kind announced so far by the chipmaker.

"It's a step in terms of building into a business level we wish to achieve," Sunit Rikhi, Vice President and General Manager of Intel custom foundry, told Reuters on Monday. "There's no doubt in my mind the foundry will be a significant player in the future."

Building new generations of chip manufacturing plants is becoming more and more expensive, and Intel has said in the past it was willing to open its facilities to carefully selected customers - as long as doing so does not its help competitors.

Intel has announced agreements to manufacture on behalf of Achronix Semiconductor Corp and other small chipmakers but Monday's announcement with Altera, one of two leading programmable chipmakers, is potentially much larger.

"They've crossed over the line from it just being a questionable experiment to - we're going to do this for tier-1 customers," said RBC analyst Doug Freedman.

With Intel struggling to find its footing in smarpthones and tablets with its own processor designs, some investors believe Intel may eventually agree to make Apple's processors for the iPhone and iPad.

"If and when we are called upon to serve large mobile customers who can drive a lot more volume, we could serve them today in terms of capability," Rikhi said. "I'm confident we have a very strong platform of offering upon which we can scale."

He declined to discuss Apple specifically.

HEAVY INVESTMENT

Most chipmakers in recent decades have given up running their own capital-intensive fabs, turning instead to contract manufacturing "foundries" like Taiwan's TSMC.

Intel has kept its own fabs and invested heavily in them over decades, resulting in a lead in manufacturing know-how that allows it to make chips that in some respects are more advanced than products from rivals like Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics.

Altera Chief Executive John Daane told Reuters in a phone interview that Altera, which depends on communications infrastructure for about half of its business, is the only major programmable chipmaker that will have access to Intel's plants.

"We are essentially getting access like an extra division of Intel. As soon as they're making the technology available to their various groups to do design work, we're getting the same," he said.

Daane said Intel's manufacturing technology will give Altera's chips a several-year advantage against Xilinx, its main competitor in programmable chips. He said Altera would continue to make other chips with TSMC, its long-time foundry.

Shares of Altera were unchanged in extended trading after closing down 0.96 percent at $35.01. Xilinx was down about 0.9 percent at $37, versus a close of $37.30 on the Nasdaq.

Intel's stock was up 0.49 percent in extended trade after closing down 0.93 percent at $20.23.

Cuba parliament gathers, will select president

(AP) ? Cuba's parliament reconvened Sunday with new membership and was expected to name Raul Castro to a new five-year-term as president. All were watching whether younger politicians might be tapped for other top leadership posts, providing hints of a possible future successor.

Castro fueled speculation on Friday when he talked of his possible retirement and suggested he has plans to resign at some point. It was unclear whether the 81-year-old leader was joking, but he promised his speech Sunday would be "interesting."

If a fresh face is named as one of his top deputies, it could indicate that his administration is settling on who might carry the country forward when those who fought in the 1959 revolution can no longer do so.

Raul Castro turns 82 this year and would be 86 when a new term ends. His top two lieutenants are also in their 80s.

"This National Assembly is important because it formally is going to govern the fate of the country for the next five years, which will be decisive for changing personnel ? what I call the intergenerational transition," said Arturo Lopez-Levy, a Cuban economist and analyst who lectures at the University of Denver. "The intergenerational transition cannot be put off any longer."

The 612 members of parliament are due to be sworn in during the morning and then pick a new National Assembly president for the first time in 20 years, as longtime chief Ricardo Alarcon was not on the ballot this year.

The assembly will also nominate the Council of State, Cuba's maximum governing body, which is made up of the president, a first vice president, five vice-presidents, a secretary and 23 other members.

The president also oversees the Council of Ministers, or Cabinet.

Castro has spoken in the past of implementing two-term limits for public officials up to and including the president, as well as the importance of grooming new leaders to take over from his graying generation.

This would be his second full term after formally assuming the presidency in 2008. He took over provisionally in 2006 when his elder brother, Fidel, was stricken with a life-threatening intestinal illness.

Raul Castro is about halfway through a program of key social and economic reforms that have already seen the expansion of private business activity, legalized home and car sales, an easing of restrictions on foreign travel and the handover of fallow state land to independent farmers.

Cuban state media said both Castros received a standing ovation when they arrived at a Havana convention center for Sunday's parliamentary gathering.

A photo posted online by the news agency Prensa Latina showed the brothers sitting next to each other at the assembly, along with first vice president Jose Ramon Machado Ventura.

Foreign media were not invited to the early parts of the gathering, but were promised access to its closing moments.

Ronda Rousey: More concerned with sports bra than Liz Carmouche standing submission attempt at UFC 157

Ronda Rousey appeared to be moments away from defeat in the UFC 157 main event when Liz Carmouche nearly scored a submission win. Rousey overcame the adversity, and at the event's post-fight show on FUEL TV said she was more worried about her bra than Carmouche's submission attempt.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey survived the first serious scare of her seven-fight career when she escaped a first-round rear-naked choke attempt by Liz Carmouche in the main event of UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

To watch full fight video highlights of Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche click here.

Rousey (7-0) appeared moments away from being on the wrong side of the upset of the female combat sports century when Carmouche nearly locked in the choke from a standing position, but the champion survived and rallied back for a submission win of her own with just 14-seconds remaining in the opening round.

The fight was sensational, and on the UFC 157 post-fight show on FUEL TV, the 26-year-old champion talked to Ariel Helwani about Carmouche's submission attempt and how close "Girl-Rilla" was to making her quit, stating she was more worried about revealing herself to the world than tapping out.

Her words:

"I was thinking about my bra, actually. I kept thinking, I didn't order this one myself, so they gave me my weigh in bra for the fight. If you look back, I was adjusting myself at one point while she was on my back. Multitasking [laughs]!"

Rousey admitted Carmouche had her in the most danger of anything thus far in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career, but claimed she was comfortable through the heart-stopping sequence and said the only reason she found herself in that position was her willingness to take risks.

"I was trying just to ignore everything until I was out there. It was weird -- I was in there just yesterday so it felt like a familiar place. It didn't seem odd at all.... I think I was less nervous [for this fight]. I think I was most nervous for the Julia Budd fight, way back, I don't know why I was so nervous for that one. On the ground I feel so comfortable -- I don't ever feel like I'm in danger -- so I don't mind taking a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back, I was thinking more about keeping my sports bra up while she is trying to choke me. I felt very safe and in control even though it didn't look like that."

With the win over Carmouche, Rousey keeps her incredible undefeated streak intact and unless she encounters another near wardrobe malfunction that causes her to mind to slip, it's hard to see any women at 135-pounds defeating the face of female MMA.

NYPD Creates Team to Find Stolen Apple Products

BY CANDICE AVILES

If you?re in New York, you may want to keep a close eye on any Apple products you own. The New York Police Department and Apple are now teaming up to fight against Apple product theft.

This move is due to a significant spike in Apple product thefts nationwide, according to the Huffington Post. ?The New York Police Department said a rise in stolen Apple products -- nearly 4,000 more than the previous year -- caused a slight increase in the city?s annual crime index.?

The New York Post breaks down how the process works. Once an Apple product is stolen, detectives get the tracking numbers of the item. ?That number, known as the International Mobile Station Equity Identity, is then shared with the officers in Police Headquarters who pass it on to Apple... the company then informs the NYPD of the device?s current location.?

But it?s not just New York. Other police stations are reporting similar trends including Chicago, Los Angeles, and St. Louis.

The phenomenon of stolen apple products has even picked up the nickname ?apple-picking.? ?According to CNN, the NYPD?s detectives found that stolen apple products usually stay within the same state: ?About 75% of them stay in the city of New York.?

This effort to prevent ?apple-picking? has been something long in the works. ?TechCrunch reports, ?along with Apple?s direct work with the NYPD, the wireless industry as a whole has been working to form a database of tracking numbers to help keep theft down, or at the very least, return as many stolen devices as possible.?

But that effort won?t launch until November of 2013.

China Defense Ministry Blasts Mandiant Hacking Report

Today in international tech news: China denies and decries a recent report about government-sanctioned hacking; Apple supplier Foxconn says its hiring cutbacks are due to a higher retention rate, not lower iPhone sales; and The Pirate Bay -- get this -- sues over copyright violations.

China's defense ministry staged a news conference Wednesday to deny and decry a report that the People's Liberation Army was engaged in cyberwarfare against U.S. corporations, organizations and government agencies.

The denial specifically addressed the bombshell Mandiant hacking study, reported The New York Times. The study declared that the PLA's Unit 61398, located near Shanghai, was one of the world's "most aggressive computer hacking operations."

China itself had been the victim of cyberattacks, said a ministry official, and Mandiant mischaracterized China's activities. Chinese military forces have never supported hacking, added the spokesperson.

If accurate, the Mandiant report would seem to leave little doubt that the hacking activities of Unit 61398 were officially sanctioned.

In a related story, in 2004 China's army offered scholarships to new hackers to join Unit 61398, GBTimes.com reported. The advertisement was reportedly posted on the Zhejiang University School of Computer Science and Technology website, and while it is certainly no smoking gun, it is nonetheless more fodder as the tech and geopolitical worlds digest this story.

Foxconn Technology Group, the Apple manufacturing partner notorious for worker riots and numerous employee suicides, has stopped hiring at a plant in Shenzhen which makes popular devices such as the iPhone 5.

Foxconn has also stopped recruiting for other factories across China, according to The Guardian.

The slowdown, however, is not linked to slow Apple sales, according to Foxconn, but to "an unprecedented rate of return of employees following the Chinese New Year."

Foxconn, like other Chinese manufacturers, relies on migrant labor. Migrant workers often travel to be with family for the Chinese New Year, which is China's biggest holiday (so big, in fact, that it has given rise to a market for apps that can cut train ticket lines on the Web.)

The New Year did indeed just take place, so Foxconn's explanation may hold water in that regard.

Hinting that the slowdown in hiring may be caused by lack of demand, however, the Guardian points out that Apple sold fewer iPhones than expected in the fourth quarter, and that Samsung and other manufacturers are slowly but surely gaining market share.

Lack of demand is not the culprit, said Foxconn, also a supplier for HP and Dell. Up to 97 percent of employees returned from the holidays, according to a Foxconn spokesperson. The past average is closer to 70-80 percent.

To its credit, the much-maligned Foxconn has reportedly improved working conditions and may have even given raises to some employees. It is perhaps more plausible now than in years past that Foxconn employees did come back after the holiday.

Pirate Bay Makes Copyright Claim

In one of the biggest cases of pot-calling-kettle-black since China sued Apple for copyright infringement, file sharing site The Pirate Bay has asked Finland's Economic Crime unit to investigate anti-piracy group CIAPC for copyright violations, according to Torrent Freak.

The crux of The Pirate Bay's complaint, according to Torrent Freak, is that CIAPC copied The Pirate Bay homepage and CSS file. The Pirate Bay reportedly has a usage policy prohibiting anyone from using its material without permission.

The CIAPC site was launched to disseminate information about legal alternatives to file sharing.

Oscar Pistorius bail hearing nearing decision

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? A magistrate may rule Friday in Oscar Pistorius' bail hearing, deciding if the double-amputee athlete can be freed before trial or if he has to remain in custody over the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp.

The prosecution was expected to complete its arguments opposing bail as the hearing, which should have been completed Wednesday, goes into a fourth day.

Pistorius is charged with one count of premediated murder over the Feb. 14 killing of Steenkamp. He says the shooting was accidental because he thought there was a dangerous intruder inside his home.

Pistorius' coach, Ampie Louw, says he's considering putting Pistorius back in training if he's bailed to allow him to "get his mind kind of clear."

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair will decide if Pistorius is freed with conditions.

GOP senators are treading carefully with tea party

Twice burned, Republicans are treading carefully around tea party groups as they pursue a Senate majority that slipped through their fingers in 2010 and 2012.

"You'd have to be an idiot not to prepare" for primary election challenges from the right, no matter the state, says Rob Jesmer, who was executive director of the GOP Senate campaign committee when flawed, conservative candidates captured primaries, only to lose winnable races in the fall.

While incumbents work to ward off or repel challenges from within their party, a Republican tempest already is flaring in Georgia, where GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss is stepping down. Party officials also look apprehensively toward Iowa, where Sen. Tom Harkin's decision to retire down opens up a seat long in Democratic hands.

The developments come at a time the Republican Party nationally is involved in a well-chronicled period of introspection after failing to win the White House last fall. President Barack Obama's support reached 53 percent among women who cast ballots, 60 percent among voters under 30, some 71 percent among Hispanics and 93 percent among blacks. Numerous officials have said the party must find a way to broaden its appeal rather than continue to steer rightward.

Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for Republicans, said consternation about a replay of recent politically damaging primaries "at least for the moment, doesn't seem to be an issue" for the GOP. Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, who chairs the campaign committee, declined a request for an interview.

Yet the divisions that pit the party establishment against insurgents and self-styled grass-roots groups show no signs of abating.

Karl Rove, a prominent strategist with deep ties to the Republican establishment, recently disclosed creation of a Conservative Victory Fund with the stated goal of backing electable conservatives in party primaries.

But when Rep. Tom Price of Georgia, a longtime conservative and possible Senate contender, was quoted in the National Review as saying he didn't oppose the objectives espoused by Rove's group, he drew a slap from a rival organization with close tea party ties.

"The Republican establishment is becoming increasingly hostile to the conservative movement, and Congressman Price should openly and aggressively oppose their efforts, not defend them," blogged Matt Hoskins, head of the Senate Conservatives Fund, an organization founded by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

Price's office declined comment.

Steven Law, head of the Conservative Victory Fund, said it was too early to predict which races it would become involved in. He said the organization hopes to "work with other groups that share that mission to see if we can ensure more rigorous evaluation of candidates, find consensus where possible and perhaps most importantly prevent the Democrats from picking our nominees for us."

Incumbent Republicans seem eager to avoid antagonizing groups that have helped elect tea party favorites such as Sens. Mike Lee in Utah, Rand Paul in Kentucky, Marco Rubio in Florida and Ted Cruz in Texas in recent years.

Even before the beginning of the year, the party's Senate leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, hired the campaign manager who guided Paul to his establishment-upending victory in 2010.

The party's second-ranking leader, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, was one of only three Senate Republicans to oppose John Kerry's confirmation as secretary of state. He has said he expects a primary challenge and Democrats recently accused him of being on "Cruz control," as he seeks a new term.

Huawei GL07S revealed for Japan, looks like the Ascend P2

Huawei GL07S revealed for Japan 15GHz quadcore, 47inch 720p display

This one's a little puzzling. Japanese carrier Emobile has announced a new phone from Huawei, the memorably-named GL07S. The confusing part is that it looks almost identical to the black-colored Ascend P2, with the same three-line menu button differentiating it from another handset leak. It's hard to say just yet, but Huawei might be readying two devices like it did during CES, where it unveiled the P2's predecessor alongside an even thinner S model. This Japan-bound offering measures up a 8.6mm thick, which while certainly no porker, is a bit more than those promises of a 6.5mm smartphone. However, there's still enough here to intrigue us, with a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 13-megapixel camera, 32GB of built-in storage and a 2,350mAh battery rounding out a pretty respectable spec sheet. It's also going to be an important phone for the relatively small phone network too -- it's their first LTE smartphone.

Bennigan's Kicks Off 2013 In Legendary Style With 20 New Restaurant Agreements And Five New Franchise Partners

Iconic Brand Soars to 25% Growth with Multi-Unit Deals, Domestic and International Expansion

Bennigan's Kicks Off 2013 In Legendary Style With 20 New Restaurant Agreements And Five New Franchise PartnersDallas, TX? (RestaurantNews.com)? On the heels of another phenomenal year of growth in 2012, Bennigan?s Franchising Company is continuing to reinvent itself in the U.S. and on a global scale.? Today, the iconic brand announced the signing of five new franchise agreements and plans to develop 20 new restaurants.? These newest franchise partners will bring the chain?s Legendary Irish hospitality to cities throughout Texas, Tennessee and Florida, joining a franchise team that is also currently expanding the brand internationally in the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and Mexico.? This explosive?growth, along with three domestic openings at the end of 2012 and a recent debut in Dubai, is another example of how Bennigan?s has rekindled a ?bleeding green? passion in loyal guests and partners around the world.

?We are honored to team up with so many committed franchisees who believe in our mission and want to grow with us as we continue to revolutionize casual dining,? said Paul Mangiamele , Bennigan?s President & CEO. ?This intense passion and nostalgia for our brand is what has fueled our return to relevance and shown our guests and franchise partners that the beloved Irish brand they remember is back and better than ever.?

New Bennigan?s Area Developer Aslam Khan, CEO of Falcon Holdings, is a well-respected businessman in the QSR space with over 200 Church?s Fried Chicken locations. The Bennigan?s corporate team is looking forward to partnering with such a talented and experienced restaurateur to develop five restaurants and expand the brand into Florida and Texas markets. Khan?s first restaurant is expected to open in late 2013 on the site of a former high-volume Bennigan?s location in Orlando, Fla.

?Having been a franchisee for several decades, I seek franchisors with a razor-like focus on providing the resources and infrastructure that not only supports their franchisees but also provides a business model capable of producing compelling returns on capital,? said Aslam Khan , CEO of Falcon Holdings. ?For me, it?s about finding true restaurant operators servicing operators. Falcon Holdings has found this unique formula with the Bennigan?s Franchise model.?

David and Melissa Hunt are also new multi-unit franchise partners joining the Green Dream Team, signing an agreement to develop five Bennigan?s restaurants in Tennessee. The first location is expected to open in Fayetteville this summer. The Hunts are long-time residents of Jackson, Tenn., and have owned Hunt Services since 1999. Through that company, they own and operate several foodservice and hotel businesses.

David Hollinger of Hollinger Restaurant Group has signed an agreement to develop three Bennigan?s restaurants in the Florida Panhandle. Hollinger has also enjoyed business success in the automotive industry and real estate development, but he started in the restaurant industry and has always had a passion for the service sector.

Mesa Restaurant Holdings, LLC, led by Marisol Gonzales and her husband Dr. Allamm Morales, has signed on to bring Bennigan?s to Melbourne, Fla. Finally, Paradigm Restaurant Hospitality, LLC, led by Nimit Patel , will open Bennigan?s in the Pampa, Texas, area in late 2013.

?Our newest franchise partners are joining the Bennigan?s renaissance at a very exciting time, and we are thrilled to grow our presence in these three states in the years to come,? said Mangiamele. ?Over the past few months, we have launched new prototype and design options, new menus, a new bar experience and new marketing initiatives that have set our restaurant teams on a path for success and customer loyalty in their communities. Our food, our Irish hospitality and our passion for what we do is delivering results and fueling our continued growth.?

Internationally, the brand recently celebrated a grand opening in the United Arab Emirates.? Franchise partners Dynamic Hospitality opened their first Dubai location in January and plan to open two more Bennigan?s in the United Arab Emirates this year. One will be in the Dubai Mall, the world?s largest shopping mall, and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2013.? The second will be in the Sahara Centre in Sharjah. In Mexico, Bennigan?s will be opening two new restaurants in Veracruz with the Consorcio Restaurantero Group.? Finally, the AXM Overseas Holdings Group will be adding their fifth Bennigan?s in Cyprus later this year.

Now approaching 100 units, Bennigan?s experienced extensive domestic and international expansion in 2012, ending the year with three openings in December alone. These included Clarksburg, Md., where the opening of Bennigan?s brought the first official casual dining restaurant to that town. Bennigan?s restaurants also opened in Jonesboro, Ark., and Fort Worth, Texas.

These new and existing franchisees are benefitting from the chain?s Legendary comeback, which began in May 2011 and has separated Bennigan?s from a sea of sameness. Through careful attention to menu optimization and a streamlined new prototype, the brand has honored its heritage while launching new initiatives that both rekindle emotional connections and affect a dramatic impact on restaurant sales and profits.

Bennigan?s Franchising Company plans to continue its growth momentum and has agreements to develop over 30 new restaurants in the next few years in New Jersey, Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, Minnesota, Florida, Tennessee and Michigan. International openings are slated for Dubai, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador, Cyprus and U.S. Army Base Camp Humphreys in the Republic of Korea.

Michael Jordan's Trainer Thinks MJ Could Average 20 Points If He Played in the NBA Today

Look, we know that, if he made a commitment to do it, Michael Jordan could probably play in the NBA again. In fact, we know he could do it. And, he could probably still put up some points, too?for at least a few games. But then, we have to believe that his body would begin to break down more quickly than it used to and, before long, he'd be struggling to score more than five or six points per game. THE GUY IS 50! He's not supposed to be dropping 20-plus points every night in the NBA anymore.

His former trainer Tim Grover isn't so sure about that, though. He believes that, if he wanted to, MJ could still average 20 per game playing in the NBA. He said so during a radio interview earlier today.

"He'd average 20," Grover said. "Yeah, he'd average 20?Yes, Father Time is undefeated. But, again, there's so much advancement out there?in anti-aging and so forth, so it is possible. I don't think that he would come back unless he was 100 percent ready."

The only problem? Like we said, MJ is 50. There's really no such thing as "100 percent" anymore. So, can we please stop pretending like he's really going to make a comeback and win the scoring title next season? Not going to happen, guys. Not. Going. To. Happen.

(AP) ? Following the Miami Hurricanes' latest down-to-the-wire victory, Shane Larkin was asked where the win ranked this year.

"Umm ..." he said, mulling over the question before coach Jim Larranaga interrupted.

"Tied for first," Larranaga said. "With all the games."

The Hurricanes' unprecedented season to savor took another thrilling twist Tuesday. Reggie Johnson made a tie-breaking layup with 5.7 seconds left, and the No. 2-ranked Hurricanes overcame a ragged offensive performance for the second game in a row to beat Virginia 54-50 and remain unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Durand Scott added two clinching free throws with four seconds to go for the Hurricanes, who earned their 14th consecutive victory. The win came two nights after they rallied late to beat Clemson 45-43.

The Hurricanes (22-3, 13-0 ACC) improved to 12-0 at home. They hold a 3?-game edge over second-place Duke in the ACC as they chase their first league basketball championship.

"Nothing happening now is a coincidence," Johnson said. "We really worked for this. I think we're just getting what we deserve."

Virginia (18-8, 8-5) fell to 0-6 in Miami. The Cavaliers led only once, at 29-28, but Evan Nolte tied the game at 50 by sinking a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left.

After a timeout, Larkin dribbled past two screens, faked a pass and then hit an open Johnson under the basket, and the senior center made a reverse layup. Paul Jesperson's inbounds pass was intercepted by Scott, who was fouled and hit both free throws.

Johnson's last-second tip-in 10 days earlier beat North Carolina State.

"Those game-winning shots, you never forget those the rest of your life," Larranaga said. "He'll be telling his friends when he's my age, 'I remember when I played against Virginia and scored the game-winning basket.' And they'll all think he's exaggerating."

Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said Johnson's basket was too easy.

"We left the rim unprotected," Bennett said. "For playing such a sound game defensively, it does sting to give them one at the rim. You want them to at least earn it. Make them hit a contested shot, and obviously that was an uncontested shot."

Defense kept the Hurricanes in front on a night when went 1 for 7 from 3-point range and struggled against a Virginia defense ranked fourth in the nation. The Hurricanes smothered Virginia with their aggressive man-to-man.

"They did a good job of trying to make everything difficult," Virginia's Joe Harris said. "It seemed like they tried to overplay everything."

Harris, one of the nation's top outside shooters, had 16 points but only one 3-pointer. He extended his streak of treys to 16 consecutive games by sinking one in the final minute.

Miami held the Cavaliers to 39-percent shooting and blocked seven shots. Julian Gamble had four blocks, including three on one possession.

"I really pride myself in protecting the rim," Gamble said. "I joke with my teammates about having block parties during these games."

The Hurricanes held a league opponent to 50 points or less for the sixth time. They're 4-0 in ACC play in games decided by four points or less.

Miami climbed on Monday to No. 2 in the rankings, best in the program's history. For two weeks the Hurricanes have been the only unbeaten team in league play among the major conferences.

Their ACC start is the best since Duke went 16-0 and won the conference in 1999.

"They're doing a great job," Bennett said. "They've earned their victories, and they're a hard team to play against. You've got to be very sound to beat them. We almost were ? just a few possessions away."

Larkin had 11 points, including four in the final 42 seconds, to go with six assists and only one turnover. Rion Brown added 10 points off the bench in 25 minutes. Gamble had eight points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes started fast on offense, working the ball inside and shooting 5 for 5 in the first 3:21. But points were tough to come by after that.

Instead it was Miami's defense that had a sellout crowd roaring, especially when Gamble blocked three consecutive shots by Akil Mitchell.

The Cavaliers trailed by seven points early and took their only lead seven minutes into the second half. Brown answered by making three consecutive free throws after being fouled on a long attempt, then sank a 3-point shot to put the Hurricanes ahead 36-29. That matched their largest lead.

Joe Hundley was charged with assault after allegedly hitting a 19-month-old boy who had started to cry aboard a Delta flight.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

A man accused of uttering a racial slur and slapping another passenger's crying toddler during a flight has been fired in the wake of the alleged incident.

Joe Hundley, 60, from Hayden, Idaho, was charged with assault after he allegedly hit the 19-month-old boy who had started to cry during the airplane?s descent, NBC station KARE?reported.

According to court documents, the child?s mother Jessica Bennett alleges Hundley leaned over and said, "Shut that [N-word] baby up!" before slapping the child. This caused him to bleed and cry even harder, his mother told KARE.

'Offensive and disturbing'
The Boise Weekly reported that Bennett's story was supported by another passenger who was aboard the Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta on Feb. 8. That could not be independently confirmed by NBC News.

Hundley is no longer working for Idaho-based aircraft component manufacturer, Unitech, its?parent company AGC Aerospace and Defense?said in a statement on its website Sunday:

?Reports of the recent behavior of one of our business unit executives while on personal travel are offensive and disturbing. We have taken this matter very seriously and worked diligently to examine it since learning of the matter on Friday afternoon. As of Sunday, the executive is no longer employed with the company.

?We wish to emphasize that the behavior that has been described is contradictory to our values, embarrassing and does not in any way reflect the patriotic character of the men and women of diverse backgrounds who work tirelessly in our business.?

In an interview with KARE, Bennett said Hundley appeared intoxicated, accusing him of becoming increasingly obnoxious during the flight.

"He reeked of alcohol," Bennett said.? "He was belligerent and?I was uncomfortable."

Hundley's attorney, Marcia Shein of Atlanta, told the station her client will plead not guilty to the charge.?

The Spokesman-Review newspaper of Spokane, Wash., reported that Hundley had denied the allegations.

?I can only say it?s an absolute falsehood,? the Spokesman-Review quoted Hundley as saying.?
