Skype for Outlook.com preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon

Skype for Outlookcom preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon

Outlook.com's 60 million-plus users will have another feature to take advantage of soon, as Skype is previewing built-in web access to its service. Currently available in the UK (headed to the US and Germany in "coming weeks," -- worldwide this summer) it lets users make calls directly from their inbox via a browser plugin available for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Users with existing Skype accounts will also need to link their account to to the website which will allow their contacts to be merged, with the idea of having more choices of how to reach out to close contacts. Gmail's added easy access to hangouts and even Facebook has integrated Skype-connected video into its messaging so we suppose it's necessary for feature parity, with the added bonus of Skype's large install base. There's a video preview embedded after the break, or you can head to Skype's blog for more details.

Israel lawmaker claims Hezbollah getting chemicals from Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A former Israeli defense minister alleged Monday that Syria's chemical weapons are "trickling" to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the first claim by a senior politician in Israel that one of the country's nightmare scenarios is coming true.

Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who also called for international intervention in the Syria's civil war to stop mass civilian deaths, did not supply any evidence for his claim.

"The process of weapon transferal to Hezbollah has begun," Ben-Eliezer told The Associated Press. He refused to elaborate.

Ben-Eliezer, a retired general who is now a lawmaker from the opposition Labor party, also told Israel Radio that he "has no doubt" that Syrian President Bashar Assad has already used chemical weapons and that that "these weapons are trickling to Hezbollah."

His statements do not represent an official assessment and defense officials say that, while they are concerned about Hezbollah getting chemical weapons, they are assuming it has not yet done so.

Israel has repeatedly expressed concern that Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants like Lebanon's Hezbollah, an Assad ally, or an al-Qaida-linked group fighting with the rebels. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that militants getting chemical arms or other sophisticated weapons is a red line that could trigger military action.

Israel is widely believed to have carried out an airstrike in Syria early this year on a shipment of sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles allegedly bound for Hezbollah. Israel has all but confirmed it carried out the attack.

Although Assad is a bitter enemy, Israel has been careful not to take sides in Syria's civil war, partly because the Assad family has kept the border with Israel quiet for the past 40 years and because of fears of what would happen if he is overthrown. Israeli military officials believe some Syrian opposition groups, especially those affiliated with the al-Qaida terror group, will turn their focus toward Israel once Assad is ousted.

Ben-Eliezer said he is "amazed by the silence of the world" and that the international community needs to intervene to end the high civilian death toll in Syria's civil war. He said Israel should consider action if there is no international intervention.

"I wouldn't rule out preparing a plan for Israel to act if the world continues to remain silent and the weapons continue to flow to Hezbollah. These are crazy people, terrorists who will not hesitate to use this tomorrow morning," he said.

This week another former defense chief, Environment Minister Amir Peretz, also called for international action in Syria.

Both sides in Syria's civil war accuse each other of using chemical weapons in the war, which according to the U.N. has killed more than 70,000 people.

The U.S. has warned such weapons cross a red line and last week said the weapons were probably used, though it still seeks definitive proof.

Last week, Brig. Gen. Itai Brun, the head of research and analysis in Israeli military intelligence, said Assad's soldiers had used chemical weapons against rebels. He said sarin, a lethal nerve agent, was probably used in one instance. He cited images of alleged victims of the attacks foaming at the mouth and displaying other apparent symptoms of chemical attacks as part of the evidence.

The Israeli government convened its Security Cabinet to discuss Syria on Sunday but no details were released.

Is this typical of how lesbians feel? - Empty Closets

I'm still in the process of figuring out my orientation, and I was wondering if this is typical to feel this way if you're a lesbian.

When I think about having sex with a guy, the whole idea of it seems foreign and actually strange.

When I think about intimacy/basically being naked with a girl, it seems like ok, this is safe. It's familiar. And therefore doesn't make me feel uncomfortable. [this is hypothetical, I have never been physically intimate with a girl in any way] I can't tell if I feel this way because a girl's body is like mine and that is familiar, or if it's because SHE IS A GIRL.

The idea of sex with a guy just seems...weird.

Is this typical of how lesbians feel about sex w/ the opposite gender vs. the same gender?

Also, I am very thin, and part of what spurred my questioning is that I realized when I would pick out what I was wearing, I would worry that T-shirts instead of frilly stuff would make me look like a lesbian because I am thin to the point of having no shape. I was literally worried I looked lesbian. I would put something on and look in the mirror and think "No..this won't work. I look lesbian." I realized after a few months of worrying about that pretty often that straight people probably don't worry they look lesbian, unless they ARE lesbian. Right? Has anyone else done this?

I also have been offended in the past when close guy friends have flirted with me. It's like, no...you're supposed to be my friend. I don't know if it's because it's in the friend territory already, or if I just don't feel comfortable with guys seeing me that way. Except for one guy ever, guys feeling that way about me makes me feel uneasy.

Lastly, I've only had one boyfriend and it lasted a very short period of time (2 weeks). I got in a relationship because I wanted to have a boyfriend. Not because I wanted to be close with him but because I felt like by having a boyfriend I was finally being grownup and mature. Like having a boyfriend was biting the bullet and being an adult, and that's what adults do, they have boyfriends. I was just 17 at the time, but you know what I mean. Is this typical of how lesbians have felt about relationships with guys in the past? The whole feeling like getting a boyfriend is something you do to be mature, not something you're diving into with glee?

Basically, the idea of being in a relationship with a girl seems safe, and the idea of being in a relationship with a guy seems...foreign. Is this also typical of how lesbians feel?

Feel free to dissect this post, answer only certain sections which apply if any, etc. It will help me a lot to hear from other people who have felt similarly.

Study: RPS to cost Nevadans $2.2 billion, 1,930 jobs over 12 years ...

filed:? April 26, 2013 ? Nevada

Credit:? April 26, 2013 | www.foxreno.com ~~

LAS VEGAS ? Government energy mandates will cost Nevadans $2.275 billion while lowering employment by 1,930 jobs over the next dozen years, concludes a new study from the Nevada Policy Research Institute.

The study, entitled RPS: A Recipe for Economic Decline, details the wealth-destroying impact of Nevada?s Renewable Portfolio Standard, which mandates that NV Energy use renewable-energy resources to supply 25 percent of Nevada?s electricity by 2025. The report was produced by three scholars from the Beacon Hill Institute for Public Policy Research at Suffolk University: David G. Tuerck, Paul Bachman and Michael Head.

Because renewable energy is more expensive than energy from traditional sources, the study finds, the RPS will kick Nevada?s electricity prices 6 percent higher by 2025.

?Increases in electricity costs have a profound negative effect on the economy ? similar to tax increases ? because prosperity and economic growth depend on access to reliable and affordable energy,? said Bachman. ?Since electricity is an essential commodity, consumers and producers of goods will have limited opportunity to avoid the costs added by the renewable standards.

?Over 12 years, Nevada?s RPS will cost families an average of $940 in higher power rates. For the poorest members of society, these energy taxes will compete directly with essential purchases in the household budget, such as food, transportation and shelter.?

The Nevada Legislature is currently considering changes to Nevada?s RPS, including Senate Bill 252, which would not allow energy-efficiency measures to count towards Nevada?s 25 percent mandate.

?If SB 252 passes, the detrimental impact on Nevada jobs and household budgets created by the RPS will only get worse,? said Geoffrey Lawrence, NPRI?s deputy policy director. ?Even though Public Utilities Commissioner David Noble recently noted that ratepayers ?are maxed out,? many legislators continue to push for laws that will drive electricity prices even higher.

?Government cannot create a more prosperous society by requiring the state?s public utility to produce an essential product through less-efficient and less-reliable means. Anyone who says otherwise is either economically illiterate or willfully misleading.?

The study notes that power provided by wind and solar sources have significant ?intermittency? issues ? meaning that when the wind doesn?t blow or the sun doesn?t shine, wind and solar power plants don?t produce electricity. Thus, in order to keep the voltage of the electricity grid in equilibrium, so-called ?renewable? resources like wind and solar power still require traditional power plants to run, or idle continuously, as back-up generation.

?If the wind dies down or blows too hard, which trips a shutdown mechanism in commercial windmills, another power source must be ramped up or cycled instantaneously,? said Bachman. ?Because of these inherent limitations, new wind and solar generation plants do not replace any dispatchable generation sources.?

Added Lawrence: ?High electricity prices already limit job creation and restrict Nevada?s economy. Even if the Legislature doesn?t impose new RPS mandates, the RPS currently in place will reduce real disposable income by $233 million over the next dozen years.

?Unfortunately for Nevada job-seekers, businesses and residential ratepayers, many politicians think they can get away with making the state?s economically destructive RPS even more damaging for everyone in the state. They think voters won?t get it.

?Many energy bills of this sort ? from NVision to SB 252 ? are before the Legislature this session. But they basically only increase the cost of electricity, taking money out of citizens? pockets and giving it to the political cronies in the renewable-energy business.?

Court says pot smokers can be fired, even in Colo.

DENVER (AP) ? Medical and recreational marijuana may be legal in Colorado, but employers in the state can lawfully fire workers who test positive for the drug, even if it was used off duty, according to a court ruling Thursday.

The Colorado Court of Appeals found there is no employment protection for medical marijuana users in the state since the drug remains barred by the federal government.

"For an activity to be lawful in Colorado, it must be permitted by, and not contrary to, both state and federal law," the appeals court stated in its 2-1 conclusion.

The ruling concurs with court decisions in similar cases elsewhere and comes as businesses attempt to regulate pot use among employees in states where the drug is legal. Colorado and Washington state law both provide for recreational marijuana use. Several other states have legalized medical use.

The patchwork of laws across the nation and state-federal conflict has left the issue unclear. Based on this ruling, employees who use pot in Colorado do so at their own risk. In Arizona, however, workers cannot be terminated for lawfully using medical marijuana, unless it would jeopardize an employer's federal licensing or contracts.

The Colorado case involves Brandon Coats, 33, a telephone operator for Englewood, Colo.-based Dish Network LLC. Coats was paralyzed in a car crash as a teenager and has been a medical marijuana patient in the state since 2009.

He was fired in 2010 for failing a company drug test, though his employer didn't claim he was ever impaired on the job.

Coats sued to get his job back, but a trial court dismissed his claim in 2011. The judge agreed with Dish Network that medical marijuana use isn't a "lawful activity" covered by a state law intended to protect cigarette smokers from being fired for legal behavior off the clock. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than half of all states have such laws.

Dish Network did not return a call seeking comment.

Coats' attorney, Michael Evans, plans to appeal and issued a statement saying the ruling has wide implications.

"This case not only impacts Mr. Coats, but also some 127,816 medical marijuana patient-employees in Colorado who could be summarily terminated even if they are in legal compliance with Colorado state law," Evans noted.

Judge John Webb dissented in the split decision, saying he couldn't find a case addressing whether Colorado judges should consider federal law in determining the meaning of a Colorado statute.

Marijuana supporters say the courts are discriminating against them because Colorado's Lawful Off-Duty Activities law, the provision protecting cigarette smokers, prevents workers from being fired for legal behavior off the clock.

The court said lawmakers could act to change the law to protect people who use marijuana, but there have been no plans to do that at the state Capitol.

Coats told reporters Thursday afternoon that he obtained a prescription for medical marijuana to deal with debilitating muscle spasms that would otherwise prevent him from working. He has been looking for a job ever since being dismissed by Dish.

"I'm not going to get better anytime soon," said Coats. "I need the marijuana, and I don't want to go the rest of my life without holding a job."

The Washington state Supreme Court also has found that workers can be fired for using marijuana, even if authorized by the state's medical marijuana law.

Last year, a federal appeals court ruled against a cancer survivor in Battle Creek, Mich., who was fired from his job with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. after failing a drug test for marijuana. Joseph Casias had a medical marijuana card and said he used pot to alleviate symptoms of an inoperable brain tumor.

According to the Marijuana Policy Project, the California Supreme Court also has ruled that people could be fired for testing positive for marijuana. The Legislature passed a bill to change that in 2008, but it was vetoed.

KLA-Tencor sees revenue below expectations, economy weighs

By Noel Randewich

(Reuters) - Chip equipment maker KLA-Tencor Corp reported lower quarterly results and said its outlook for the rest of the year has weakened due to manufacturers' concerns about the global economy.

KLA-Tencor's stock fell nearly 5 percent in extended trade after Chief Executive Rick Wallace said on a conference call he was seeing a pause in demand from contract manufacturers and gave a current quarter revenue estimate that was below expectations.

Wallace said he expects chip companies to spend close to 10 percent less on capital expenditures this year compared to 2012. He had previously expected a dip of between 5 percent and 10 percent.

KLA-Tencor said it expects bookings in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in June, of between $625 million and $775 million. That was less than the $825 million expected by B. Riley & Co analyst Ben Pang.

A slowing PC industry and worries about the economy have hurt demand for chip manufacturing gear, although booming sales of smartphones and tablets have been a bright spot.

KLA-Tencor's products help measure the effectiveness of complicated manufacturing processes and reduce defects essential for chipmakers implementing challenging new technologies.

Net income for the company's third quarter fell to $166.4 million, or 98 cents per share, from $205.3 million, or $1.21 per share in the same quarter a year earlier, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

KLA-Tencor had adjusted earnings per share of $1.01, beating expectations of 86 cents.

Revenue declined to $729 million from $840.5 million a year earlier, but beat estimates. Analysts on average were expecting third-quarter revenue of $727 million.

The company said it expects fourth-quarter revenue between $670 million and $730 million. Analysts were expecting revenue of $763 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of KLA-Tencor fell 4.95 percent in extended trade after closing up 0.74 percent at $55.90.

Ceramic foam cleans up exhaust gases

Apr. 25, 2013 ? The introduction next year of the Euro 6 exhaust-gas standard means that catalytic converters will become more expensive, above all for diesel vehicles. Empa is working on a catalytic substrate made of ceramic foam which, because of its structure, is more efficient and therefore more economic. Not only that -- it also requires less noble metal coating.

Conventional catalytic cleaning units for exhaust gases are made with a regular honeycomb structure. The catalytically active layer, which contains valuable noble metals such as platinum, rhodium or palladium, is deposited on the surface of this one-piece, or monolithic, ceramic substrate. The hot exhaust gases flow through the catalyst in a non-turbulent manner. However, since most of the flow occurs in the middle of the catalyst, this region becomes exhausted more rapidly than the peripheral areas of the monolith, which remain more or less unused. In order to extend the service life of the unit, it must be made longer. But longer also means more surface area, more noble metal content and therefore higher cost.

Empa researchers from the Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory, under the leadership of Panayotis Dimopoulos Eggenschwiler, have succeeded in finding an innovative solution to this problem. The team is working on a catalytic substrate made of ceramic foam which, in future, will replace the conventional monolithic structure. For the same catalytic performance the novel device is significantly cheaper than the monolith-based unit. In contrast to the latter, the ceramic foam has in an irregular structure -- much like a sponge -- which causes the gas passing through it to flow in a turbulent manner, distributed equally throughout the whole of its volume. Although the foam catalyst actually has less surface area than the monolith, this area is much more efficiently utilized. As a result, to achieve the same effect as a conventional catalytic unit, the ceramic type requires only one third as much expensive noble metal -- and only half the physical length.

Despite the fragility of the ceramic foam, with the help of colleagues from Empa's High-Performance Ceramics Laboratory the scientists succeeded in increasing the mechanical strength of the material many times over. Currently the research team is working to optimize the structure of the ceramic -- the foam substrate has a greater air resistance than the monolith, which results in a slight comparative increase in fuel consumption. Using sophisticated computer simulation techniques, the Empa team has developed foam structures which reduce the air resistance without affecting the necessary turbulence.

Although at the moment the foam catalyst is being manufactured purely on the laboratory scale at Empa, industrial contacts are already showing interest in the new device. The Belgian material technologies company Umicore is a partner in the project, as is Fiat Powertrain Technologies. The foam catalyst is being proven in a diesel test vehicle on the Empa site. In addition, over the last 18 months a vehicle fitted with the innovative new catalyst belonging to the Industriellen Werke Basel (IWB) has been driven around in a long-term test eventually intended to cover at least 150,000 km.

Cheaper catalysts despite more stringent exhaust gas standards

The Foamcat represents the ideal alternative to the monolithic catalyst, above all for small diesel vehicles. After the Euro 6 exhaust-gas standard comes into force in September 2014, polluting emissions from diesel motors will be obliged to sink significantly. In particular, after this date a nitrogen monoxide catalyst will be compulsory. In combination with a particle filter and the conventional hydrocarbon and carbon dioxide catalyst, this will make exhaust gas treatment for diesel automobiles significantly more expensive. With its greatly reduced requirement of expensive noble metals, Empa's Foamcat will help to minimize these costs.

inSSIDer

The free inSSIDer software utility for Windows, iOS, and Android is one of the most useful and easy-to-interpret wireless networking tools I?ve encountered. InSSIDer displays information about the wireless networks in proximity to you, including an access point?s MAC address, encryption type, signal strength, and channel. InSSIDer is a great tool for wireless networking novices, because it has an easy-to-understand interface and includes an abundance of help and tutorials. Experienced Wi-Fi professionals may find the software a bit too light and might be more interested in a more robust program such as?WiFiBuilder or Wireshark. But home power users looking to tweak their networks and those managing smaller business Wi-Fi networks would benefit by getting acquainted with inSSIDer.

Download
inSSIDer is available as a free download from www.metageek.net/products/inssider/. It?s available as a Windows desktop app or as an iOS or Android mobile app.? I run it on a Windows 7 laptop and it?s a quick and lightweight install. I can honestly say that unlike what I?ve found with some other free networking utilities I?ve used, inSSIDer has given me no problems with memory leaks or interfered with my Windows wireless settings or any other installed software.

Features and Interface
Opening inSSIDer?s interface displays the wireless adapter information of the client machine on which inSSIDer is installed. The program?s UI is divided between a pane that displays real-time information about wireless networks in proximity, and another screen shows really handy information, including tips and a user guide.

The user guide has illustrations and plain-speak about the features in the software. You don?t just get a user guide though. The interface includes links to free webinars for those who want to dive deeper into the wireless world?from diagnosing RF interference to performing basic wireless packet analysis.

There are also links to additional tools that help users find interference issues and reduce Wi-Fi saturation as well as selecting the right wireless channel.

Clicking on the ?network? tab pulls up the real-time information about all wireless networks in proximity. By default, the network you?re connected to gets starred. The software helps you optimize that network and considers it the main one to which you?re most likely to connect. The interface prominently displays details about this starred network, so you can view information such as how many other access points are using the same channel as your starred network. For performance improvement, you could place your starred network on a less crowded channel. This may be one of the most useful troubleshooting features in the software.

You get details on all networks in proximity, including signal strength (some tools refer to this as RSSI, in which the closer the number is to 0 the better), channel, security, MAC address of each access point, and the 802.11x standard being used. I do have an 802.11ac access point deployed nearby but inSSIDer reported it as 802.11n. 802.11ac reporting may not happen until the standard actually gets ratified; inSSIDer may require an update for this.

Right-clicking on any listed network opens a menu that lets you quickly select the information you want to see about that network: SSID, signal, channel, maximum rate, network type, and even the access point?s vendor. The entire view of networks can also be sorted by the same parameters.

inSSIDer will also calculate a Link score based on information such as channel overlap and signal strength for each wireless network. You can see how tweaking channel settings or even relocating an access point or router influences the score?the higher the score, the better the network performance you will receive.

A Fun, Useful Tool
What?s great about inSSIDer is that you can use it for several real-world purposes for your wireless network. For instance, say you are trying to find the best location to place an access point or router. Position the device and then fire up inSSIDER to see what? signal strength the software reports. This is really useful if you are trying to setup a Wi-Fi network in a place with lots of thick walls, glass or mirrors or multiple levels.

You can also use inSSIDer to tweak your wireless channel. In the U.S, there are 14 channels used for the 2.4GHz signal. These channels typically are 1, 6, and 11. So if you see many wireless networks in your area using channel 11 for example, by using inSSIDer you can change your 2.4 GHz signal to operate on channel 6 to tweak performance.?

Yes, it may be lightweight for those who deploy wireless networks professionally. But anyone managing a home or small business wireless network will certainly benefit from the information inSSIDer provides. It earns a 4.5 out of 5 star rating and is easily a PCMag Editors? Choice for networking utilities.

The Main in the Kitchen: Cheesy Baked Spaghetti Squash Recipe ...

final

I?ve been feeling quite sluggish lately due to all the binge eating I?ve been doing over the hibernation season. I?m sure a large majority of you will agree you feel the same. With it being Recovery Month at The Main, I?m happy I was able to explore a healthier variation to a recipe. I took mac ?n cheese and spaghetti to whole other level. I made a gluten-free, carb-free and vegetarian dish called Cheesy Baked Spaghetti Squash. It?s cheesy. It?s gooey. And it?s surprisingly healthy!

Loving food to the extent that I do, you tend to develop quite a ?few ?food vices?. One of my biggest guilty pleasures? Cheese. I fucking love cheese to no end. Put cheese on anything and it turns to gold. However, cheese isn?t considered ?healthy? unless in moderation, so when my friend sent me this recipe, I was?immediately?drawn to it. It cuts out carbs completely by replacing pasta with squash. Now, if you?ve never tried spaghetti squash and are intimidated by the nature of it, don?t fret. I promise you, it is fucking delicious and although it could never truly replace the real thing, it?s a great alternative. Besides, with all that cheese, you won?t be thinking twice about the spaghetti. The recipe also calls for spinach which makes this meal even better. I won?t get into all the reasons why spinach is good for you. It just fucking is. Look at what it did for Popeye! Okay, maybe not the best example, but you get the idea.

Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 cups cooked spaghetti squash (from about 2 small squashes)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 1/4 cup flour (use 2 tbsp corn starch for gluten free)
  • 2 cups skim milk
  • 1 cup fat free chicken broth (vegetable broth for vegetarian)
  • 8 oz Sargento 2% reduced fat mild cheddar
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 cups (about 4 oz) baby spinach
  • 1/8 cup grated parmesan

Step 1

Preheat over to?375?F.

Step 2

Cut??the squash in half lengthwise. With a spoon (or if you?re feeling like getting your fingers dirty, you could always use your hands)?remove?and?discard the?seeds.?Place?the squash on a baking sheet and bake?until tender for about 1 hour. Take them bad boys out of the oven and let cool for 10 minutes or until you can pick them up with your bare hands. I was the dumbass who thought it would be a wise idea to hold them directly out the oven. Stupid Amanda?

step1

Step 3

This is the fun part! Separate?the strands of squash with a fork and place in a medium bowl. (Be sure to maintain the heat of the oven for later instructions.)

step2

Step 4

Heat?butter and oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.?Add?onions and cook for about 2 minutes.?Stir?in the flour and reduce?heat to low and cook, stirring continually 3-4 minutes. You?ll know it?s done when the flower turns a light brownish colour.?Add?milk and chicken broth and continue whisking, raising heat to medium-high until it comes to a boil and becomes smooth and thick. Aww yee! Be sure to keep whisking for about 2 minutes;?season?with salt and pepper if needed.

Once it becomes thick,?remove?from heat and?add?cheddar cheese. Mix well and watch as it dissolves and becomes a cheesy melted dream.

step4

Step 6

Pour cheese mixture into the bowl with the cooked spaghetti squash. Add baby spinach and stir until the spinach and cheese is distributed evenly. Pour mixture?into a baking dish and sprinkle parmesan cheese on top.?Bake?for 25-30 minutes or until bubbly and golden. Mmmm.

step5

final

A cheese-tastic masterpiece!

Amanda

Facebook and romantic relationships

Apr. 23, 2013 ? A Western Illinois University faculty member who published a study about Facebook and narcissism last year has authored another study about Facebook and romantic relationships.

WIU Department of Communication Assistant Professor Christopher Carpenter, with his co-author Erin Spottswood (Cornell University), have authored, "Exploring romantic relationships on social networking sites using the self-expansion model," which will appear in the July 2013 journal issue of Computers in Human Behavior. According to Carpenter, in the study, the co-authors found the more past romantic relationships the participants had, the more interests they listed in their Facebook profiles.

"I predicted this relationship because other research suggested that part of romantic relationship development involves adopting new interests and behaviors from one's partner," he said. "I also found that people who report appearing in more photos with their partners on Facebook and who regularly tag their partner in their status updates tend to have closer romantic relationships."

In humans, the self-expansion model -- per a seminal study authored by State University of New York, Stony Brook, Psychology Professor Arthur Aron and Elaine Aron, author of the book, "The Highly Sensitive Person" -- asserts the desire to grow is a key motivation. One of the key sources of this need to expand one's self is derived from romantic relationships.

Carpenter said he studies humans' interactions on Facebook and social networks because the online networks offer a unique window into people's lives.

"We can't follow people around with a tape recorder getting a record of what they say all day. Facebook, on the other hand, offers us the chance to see one part of that record. We can see how often people interact with their romantic partners on Facebook, what they say to each other and how they present themselves on their profiles," he explained. "As for this specific study, I had read about self-expansion theory and I began wondering if we ever truly cut ties with someone when we break up. We might not see that person anymore, but when we develop a relationship with someone, we take on some of their interests and traits and, in many cases, hang on to them long after we break up. Facebook offered a unique way of examining the extent to which those traces of past relationships remain in our profiles."

Carpenter said the study's sample included 276 respondents who answered questions about their relationship histories and social networking sites uses, while a subset of the sample (149 participants) answered additional questions about their current romantic partners.

In addition to receiving wide media attention about his 2012 study, "Narcissism on Facebook: Self-promotional and Anti-social Behavior" (published in the journal, Personality and Individual Differences, March 2012), Carpenter served as an invited Oxford Union Society speaker on the motion, "This House Believes Social Media has Successfully Reinvented Social Activism," in England in May last year.

Military shows off world's first crowdsourced tank design

How do you design a tank in the age of the Internet? Not by drawing up secret blueprints in underground labs, that's for sure. Instead, you make a huge toolbox available to thousands, and offer a million bucks to the one who comes up with the best design? That's what the Defense Department's research arm, DARPA, just did.

Ground Systems, a team of three people all living in different states, created the design shown here using DARPA's VehicleFORGE online tools. Thousands of parts, materials, and other parameters could be swapped out, tweaked, and modified in order to create a vehicle platform that would be powerful and efficient but also easy to build and repair.

The design isn't particularly futuristic itself, but shows how designing something as complex and powerful as tanks and weapons can be done effectively using Internet-era collaboration tools. Plus, the winning team pockets the cool million, as the design itself goes on to further testing by the military.

The "Fast, Adaptable, Next-Generation Ground Vehicle" (FANG) project opened for registration early last year, and the process of putting together teams and vehicles progressed slowly. Over 1,000 participants and 200 teams contributed, and all their work was evaluated using a rigorous set of requirements ? for instance, will this part require regular replacement, or be very expensive to manufacture?

As it turns out, the winning design looks a lot like the concept put forward by DARPA at the outset. But the point wasn't to design a science-fiction tank, but to make a drivetrain platform that meets basic needs in an affordable and innovative way.

The next step is for the platform to actually be built by DARPA's build team, iFab, based at Penn State University. If it succeeds in basic testing and manufacturing, it will be sent out for further evaluation at a facility in Michigan.

It's all part of the Tactical Technology Office's "Adaptable Vehicle Make" program, which is testing new methods for creating and testing systems like the FANG platform. If FANG proves successful, the process could potentially be applied to anything, from guns to aircraft.

Church of Scotland faces renewed internal division on gay ministers ...

It is claimed up to 50 congregations may leave the Church of Scotland if the General Assembly votes next month to allow the ordination of?ministers who are in same-sex sexual relationships.

The Church of Scotland ordains lesbian and gay ministers ? although they have to be celibate ? whereas ministers who are in married mixed-sex sexual relationships can be ordained without the same requirement.

Following a 2011 report on the issue of gay relationships and the ministry, the General Assembly has been considering whether the church should ease the restrictions on lesbian and gay ministers.

The Scotsman reports up to 50 congregations may leave the Church of Scotland if it chooses to do so.

Although the Church of Scotland has more than 1,400 congregations, such an exodus would represent the biggest split in its ranks since the 19th-century schism which led to the Free Church of Scotland?s formation.

Commenting on the reports of a possible exodus, a Church of Scotland spokesman said: ?We regret and are saddened that any ministers or individuals feel they are obliged to, or feel the need to, leave over this issue but no-one knows how the General Assembly will vote or what it will decide until the day of the debate.?

In February, the Rev Dominic Smart and his congregation of 300 at Gilcomston South in Aberdeen left the Church of Scotland.

The congregation took issue with the General Assembly approving the appointment of the openly gay minister Scott Rennie to Queen?s Cross church in Aberdeen in 2009.

Last month, the Aberdeen presbytery agreed to let Rev Smart and his congregation use their old church on a?temporary?basis.

Psy's ?Gentleman? Hits New YouTube Record With 38M Views In One Day

Psy Gentleman"Gangnam Style" was the first video to hit 1 billion views on YouTube, a milestone it reached last December. Though arguably less catchy, Psy's followup video "Gentleman," a unique blend of pounding beats and fart jokes rumored to be an elaborate commercial for Candy Crush Saga, is now also breaking records on YouTube. The video-sharing site announced that "Gentleman" has set the record for the most views ever in a single day with over 38 million hits on April 14 alone, making it one of the biggest online music video launches ever. To put the figures in perspective, "Gentleman" was seen 100 million times in less than 4 days worldwide, a milestone that took "Gangnam Style" nearly two months to achieve.

Smack Attack Makes Sweet Music By Connecting Your Car's Steering Wheel And Your iPhone

smackattackMy car's steering wheel has taken a beating because of the all the lousy drum fills I've banged out on it over the years, and at least one entrepreneur thinks that experience could use a little bit of improvement. Gregor Hanuschak (who, in a previous life, worked for NASA) has put together a Kickstarter project for the Smack Attack, an in-car gadget that lets users make those steering wheel drum solos a bit more substantial.

T-Mobile Unlimited Plans may get tethering bundled starting Wednesday

T-Mobile leaked screenshot

Value and Classic plans could get tethering pre-packaged with 500MB, 2.5GB, and 4.5GB options

In a screenshot recently obtained by TmoNews, it appears T-Mobile may be doing further restructuring of its post-paid plans. If true, unlimited data for both the Value and Classic plans will come pre-bundled with various tethering options starting on Wednesday. Basically, instead of buying unlimited data and a separate tethering bucket, subscribers will buy unlimited data with 500MB, 2.5GB, or 4.5GB of included tethering.

Currently, 500MB of tethering is already included with unlimited data. Instead of subscribers getting a $10 add-on for 2.5GB of tethering with their $20 unlimited data plan, the same plan will start at $30 and include tethering. For $40 a month, there is also a 4.5GB tethering option. Classic Plans will get the same changes: a $30 base plan with 500MB of tethering, a $40 plan with 2.5GB of tethering, and a $50 plan with 4.5GB of tethering.

It makes sense to see further simplification of T-Mobile's plans, making customer choices easier and less confusing (and in some cases cheaper). We'll be waiting for the official announcement in the coming days to see if these changes pan out.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 coming to AT&T stores April 27th, pre-orders arrive April 25th

Samsung Galaxy S 4 coming to AT&T April 27th

Pre-orders of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 have already begun at AT&T, but the operator has been oddly silent about the actual date customers can expect to purchase one in stores and online. Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have both announced specific launch dates (April 24th and 27th, respectively), the largest GSM carrier in the country has followed up by declaring its intent to sell the flagship Samsung device on the 27th of this month. This is four days earlier than the anticipated pre-order shipment date, which means the HTC One has merely a full week to bask in the spotlight by itself. What's more, if you simply couldn't wait and jumped on those pre-orders, you'll get yours a full 48 hours early (read: April 25th). As expected, the GS 4 will be offered for $200 (16GB) and $250 (32GB) in both black and white.

Sniffing out solutions for millions of Americans with smell loss

Apr. 21, 2013 ? Snot. It's not something most of us spend a lot of time thinking about, but, for a team of researchers in Washington, D.C., it's front and center.

Robert I. Henkin, founder of the Taste and Smell Clinic in is charmingly self-deprecating. He says with a chuckle that he's often called a "spit and snot doctor," but he knows all too well that for his patients -- those who no longer can appreciate the fragrance of fresh-cut grass or the intricacies of an herb-infused sauce -- such loss is no laughing matter.

"You might think: 'Oh well, you can still hear. You can still see.' But it's amazingly important to be able to taste and smell," Henkin says. "When you say 'hello' in (some parts of China), you don't say 'hello' -- you say 'Have you eaten yet?' In other words, the social aspects of being able to eat and enjoy that are critical, and to lose that -- you lose a significant part of life."

Henkin, who at the National Institutes of Health established the first clinical program to study taste and smell dysfunction, has spent the better part of his professional life trying to get the lay of the land when it comes to the fluids that contribute to those two senses. He and his team over the years have conducted countless experiments to figure out what makes up nasal mucus and saliva and how those components affect taste and smell.

"The thing to recognize is there are 21 million people in the United States who have some abnormality of smell function. That's an amazing number," says Henkin.

On Sunday, April 21, Henkin will present new research results at the Experimental Biology 2013 conference with the hope that attendees there also will take the mission seriously, build upon his findings and come up with new therapies for patients like his.

Henkin's newest work describes the concentrations of cytokines, molecules involved in cell signaling, in nasal mucus. He'll present his findings at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which is being held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology 2013 conference.

"In a rather na?ve way, we went ahead and looked at these cytokines in nasal mucus because nobody's ever done it before," Henkin explains. This kind of strategy is par for the course for Henkin, who also was the first to report which proteins are present in saliva in 1978 and which proteins are present in nasal mucus in 2000. He emphasizes that "you can't understand the (disease) mechanisms unless you understand what's there."

"This whole role of nasal mucus -- what's there, how it works -- is something that (researchers) haven't really considered," he says. "It takes a dumb guy like me to go ahead and say 'OK, let's figure out what's there, and then we can see what we're going to do about it. It's a different approach."

What's so different about it? Henkin says most of his patients come to him as a last resort, because their primary physicians and even specialists can't offer any lasting solutions.

"The people who are interested in (smell loss) are primarily otolaryngologists, and they're trained as surgeons ? They're not trained to think about this" on the molecular level, Henkin says. "So they look at the nose, and if there's a polyp they'll take it out and say, 'Aha, there's the answer. We'll make the nasal cavity cleaner.' Well, these (molecular) structures in the nose that cause these problems are manifestations of some underlying disease process, which they've been trying to figure out for a while but haven't really succeeded."

Henkin's group has succeeded in restoring smell loss in many patients -- and sometimes by seemingly unconventional means. A few years back, they tested out a drug long used in asthmatics, theophylline, and they found that oral use could induce higher levels of a protein called cAMP in nasal mucus, which improved some patients' ability to smell. The team later found that administering a smaller dose intranasally produced a more profound effect.

Henkin says examples like that underscore the importance of understanding the molecular makeup of nasal mucus and the interactions within, rather than immediately turning to surgery or, another common practice, giving patients steroids.

"Because they've used these (steroids) to inhibit polyp formation in the nose, what happens is that in some people the smell comes back for a limited period of time. It may come back for a day or a week. And then when the drug wears off, they can't smell again," Henkin says. "We now understand a little bit about how that works -- how it affects those cytokines and other substances."

Cytokines are molecules that deliver information and induce some kind of response -- usually during immunological and inflammatory processes. Henkin's team found that in nasal mucus of patients with smell loss the concentration of anti-inflammatory cytokines was much higher than the concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines . This balance is important, he says, because the cytokine interleukin-6, which is pro-inflammatory, was particularly abundant.

"We'd looked at the literature and recognized that IL-6 is obviously elevated in a number of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. As a matter of fact, with rheumatoid arthritis you commonly have smell loss," Henkin says. "We're trying to make these connections, you see, and understand the relationships in these underlying interactions -- to give people some idea (about) homeostasis in the nasal cavity, how it's occurring, what's in nasal mucus and how each of these substances plays a specific role in smell function."

GE 1Q earnings rise on NBC sale; Europe drags

NEW YORK (AP) ? General Electric Corp. earnings rose in the first quarter on rising profit from selling aircraft engines and transportation equipment and the sale of NBC. But results were held back by economic conditions in Europe that were even worse than expected.

GE reported net income of $3.5 billion, or 34 cents per share, on revenue of $35 billion. During last year's first quarter, GE earned $3 billion, or 29 cents per share, on $35.2 billion in revenue.

Adjusted to reflect earnings only from continuing operations, GE earned 35 cents per share. That's in-line with what analysts expected, on $34.5 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

GE CEO Jeff Immelt said in a statement that operations in emerging markets and the U.S. performed as expected. But Europe ? which was expected to be bad ? worsened. Revenue in the region fell 17 percent, Immelt said.

Europe's struggles hit GE's sales of power generation and water treatment equipment especially hard. Revenue for that division fell 26 percent in the quarter, and profit fell 39 percent.

Profits in the oil and gas segment and GE's tiny energy management division also slipped in the quarter, offsetting profit gains in aviation, healthcare, transportation and home and business appliances.

Overall, sales of industrial equipment and services fell 6 percent and profit fell 11 percent. The company's sale of NBC added earnings of 8 cents per share, while profit rose 9 percent at GE Capital, the company's finance arm.

GE shares were down 69 cents, or 3 percent, to $21.97 in trading about 90 minutes before the market opened Friday.

Immelt acknowledged in the statement that GE expected the first half of this year to be difficult, but he said he expects performance to improve later this year.

GE is in the midst of shaping itself into a more focused conglomerate that sells and services industrial equipment and appliances. It is shedding divisions such as NBC Universal and shrinking its banking operations. GE sold its 49 percent of NBC Universal to Comcast for $16.7 billion in the first quarter. Earlier this month, GE announced an agreement to buy the oilfield equipment maker Lufkin Industries Inc. for $3.1 billion, as part of a push to grow its oil and gas equipment division.

That push appears to be paying off. Orders for oil and gas equipment rose 24 percent in the first quarter. Orders for aviation equipment, powered by a new jet aircraft engine, rose 47 percent.
