Columnist leaves DailyBeast after blog on gay NBA player

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Columnist Howard Kurtz left The Daily Beast on Thursday, the same day the website retracted one of his blog posts in which he mistakenly accused NBA player Jason Collins of hiding a previous engagement to a woman before declaring this week that he is gay.

A person close to the matter said Kurtz was fired because this was the latest in a series of high-profile errors, which detracted from the site's efforts to bolster the credibility of its news coverage. The gaffe also comes as The Daily Beast tries to succeed only online after dropping its print magazine, Newsweek, in December.

The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A spokeswoman for CNN, where Kurtz hosts the TV show "Reliable Sources," said the network is reviewing the matter. Kurtz's CNN show is about "how journalists do their jobs and how the media affect the stories they cover," according to the website. Kurtz is a former media columnist with The Washington Post and was The Daily Beast's Washington bureau chief.

CNN is also looking into Kurtz's relationship with the website Daily Download, which lists him as being on its board of advisers. A Huffington Post story on Wednesday noted that Kurtz promoted the site with more than 120 links in April, compared with around 20 for The Daily Beast and fewer for his CNN show.

In the retracted Daily Beast post, titled "Jason Collins' Other Secret," Kurtz says Collins "didn't come clean" about the fact that he was engaged to be married to a woman before declaring he was gay.

But Collins does just that in the eighth paragraph of the Sports Illustrated piece that came out Monday.

"When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue," Collins wrote.

On Thursday, The Daily Beast retracted Kurtz's post but left an amended version online, saying it "sincerely regrets Kurtz's error."

In the amended version, the website replaces the words "didn't come clean" with Kurtz saying Collins "downplayed" the engagement and "didn't dwell on it."

In 2011, Kurtz misquoted U.S. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi criticizing the White House, which The Daily Beast attributed to him misreading a colleague's notes. A year earlier, he mistakenly attributed quotes in a story to U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, after actually speaking to his spokesman, Kurt Bardella, on the phone.

On Twitter, Kurtz did not acknowledge any link between the most recent retraction and his departure, although he did apologize.

"Apologies: Jason Collins did mention his engagement in SI article. But he didn't tell the full story--his ex says she just learned he's gay," Kurtz tweeted.

He didn't respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Kurtz also tweeted that "as we began to move in different directions, both sides agreed it was best to part company." He added "this was in the works for some time" and that it was time for him to "move on to other opportunities."

Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown tweeted that Kurtz and The Daily Beast had "parted company ... we wish him well."

A statement from Brown highlighted moves the website is taking to bolster its coverage of Washington, including with new columnists such as Jon Favreau, Joshua Dubois and Stuart Stevens. It also mentions the site won a Webby Award for Best News site this week.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Detroit coach Mike Babcock didn't call a timeout while the Anaheim Ducks obliterated the Red Wings' three-goal lead in the third period, believing a break would only make his younger players even more nervous.

Better to let them learn how to survive playoff pressure on their own, Babcock thought.

With help from an ill-timed penalty by Anaheim's Sheldon Souray, the Red Wings figured it out and evened the series.

Gustav Nyquist scored a power-play goal at 1:21 of overtime, giving Detroit a 5-4 victory in Game 2 on Thursday night.

Johan Franzen scored two goals and Damien Brunner had his first Stanley Cup playoff goal and two assists for the Red Wings, who survived their third-period collapse with a timely goal from Nyquist.

"We knew we had to get back to playing hard in the overtime, and we did," Nyquist said. "We knew the playoffs were on the line."

Game 3 is Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Bobby Ryan scored the tying goal with 2:22 left in regulation for the Ducks, who also got goals from captain Ryan Getzlaf and Kyle Palmieri while erasing Detroit's 4-1 lead with a phenomenal surge in the final minutes.

But Souray took a slashing penalty in front of his net with 38 seconds left in regulation after an exchange with Justin Abdelkader, and Nyquist was left unchecked in the left faceoff circle for his goal with just 2 seconds remaining in the power play. The 23-year-old Swede from the University of Maine was in his sixth career playoff game.

"I think it's a great learning experience," Babcock said. "You've got the win, and you stop playing. ... You're not settling them down, you're putting gas on the fire. What are you going to do about it? You're hoping your big guys are going to go out there and make a play."

Ducks fans loudly booed the call against Souray, who joined Anaheim this season after a well-traveled career. He has been among the Ducks' best defensemen with his booming slap shot and physical two-way play.

"I didn't really see anything," Souray said of the final penalty. "It was a tough call. Tough way to end it. We battled back hard. We didn't start the game and periods as hard as they did, and they capitalized on that."

Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for Detroit, which silenced the Anaheim crowd with two goals in the first 4:20 of the Red Wings' third victory in four appearances at Honda Center this season. Abdelkader scored in the opening minute and Pavel Datsyuk had two assists.

But the Red Wings also lost rookie defenseman Danny DeKeyser for the season with a broken thumb.

"He's done," Babcock said of DeKeyser, who played a standout game before apparently getting hurt in the third period.

Jonas Hiller stopped 27 shots and Saku Koivu scored for the second-seeded Ducks, who struggled through the first two periods before rallying in the hair-raising third. Ryan and Palmieri both had a goal and an assist in the third, and Koivu added an assist.

"When you do come back to tie it, and (then) lose it, is a little more disappointing," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I was hoping it would get done before overtime, because I knew they would gain their composure again, because the last 10 minutes (of regulation), they lost it. They were fortunate starting (overtime) on the power play, and that was it."

Until the final period, Detroit had bounced back impressively from the Ducks' 3-1 series-opening victory. Babcock put veteran Todd Bertuzzi in his lineup for the first time since Feb. 7, replacing Jordin Tootoo, but otherwise kept the same lineup ? and the Wings responded with all the poise expected from a team with 22 straight playoff appearances.

While the Wings executed, the Ducks struggled until their electric third-period rally. Game 1 hero Teemu Selanne made an egregious turnover leading to Brunner's goal, and Getzlaf passed up a breakaway shot in the third period for an ill-advised pass on a play that exemplified the Ducks' struggles.

But the Ducks rallied when Getzlaf scored on a shot with his back to the net with 12:10 to play. Palmieri then scored his first career playoff goal moments after a power play ended, firing a short shot that Howard missed with his glove with 7:29 left.

Ryan nearly scored with 5? minutes to play, but his deflection in front just caught the outside post. He didn't miss on his next chance when Cam Fowler found him driving to the net with a perfect pass for a quick shot past Howard, setting off a deafening celebration.

"I think we finally settled into a pretty good rhythm there," Ryan said. "We didn't do enough, though. ... We gave them second and third chances to come up with the puck, and they're a team that capitalizes."

The Ducks attracted another large, towel-waving crowd to Honda Center after the festive atmosphere in their opener. But many fans weren't yet in their seats when Abdelkader found space near the blue line and beat Hiller with a deceptive wrist shot just 48 seconds into the game.

NOTES: The 38-year-old Bertuzzi missed nearly three months with back pain and nerve problems affecting his right leg, even forcing him to walk with a cane at times. ... The Ducks have won the series all nine times in club history after winning the first game. ... Babcock considered putting veteran Mikael Samuelsson back into the lineup, but held off. The member of the Triple Gold Club ? an Olympic gold medal, a world championship and a Stanley Cup title ? missed 41 games this season with injuries, but is healthy again.

Space Shuttle Enterprise's New Home Takes Shape at NYC Museum

Space shuttle Enterprise, NASA's test orbiter destined for display in New York City, will soon have a new home.

As aerial photographs taken Friday (April 26) show, the construction of a new exhibition pavilion is taking shape above and around the prototype space shuttle, which arrived on the flight deck of the Intrepid, Sea, Air & Space Museum, a converted World War II aircraft carrier docked on Manhattan's west side, one year ago this month.

"The one-year anniversary of Enterprise's arrival in New York City was an exciting milestone for the museum and everyone whose imagination is captured by manned space flight," a spokesperson for the Intrepid said in a statement provided to collectSPACE.com. "We are currently completing the framework of the new Space Shuttle Pavilion that will serve as the home to the Enterprise exhibit." [See photos of space shuttle Enterprise in NYC]

"We will soon be installing the outer skin of the structure, then completing the interior, in time for the opening this summer," the spokesperson said.

Enterprise, which did not fly in space but was used for a piloted approach and landing tests in 1977, touched down on April 27, 2012, at John F. Kennedy International Airport mounted atop a NASA jumbo jet. The orbiter was then transported by barge to the Intrepid just over a month later and opened for public display in July.

A short three months later, Hurricane Sandy tore through New York City, completely destroying the Intrepid's Space Shuttle Pavilion, a pressurized structure that sheltered Enterprise. The superstorm also caused minor damage to the shuttle's vertical stabilizer, or tail.

Repairs to the orbiter were finished in March, when the temporary covered scaffolding surrounding Enterprise was taken down.

As WCBS 880's traffic reporter Tom Kaminski captured in his aerial photographs, the new pavilion relies on a metal skeleton, rather than air pressure, to maintain its shape. When the storm hit last October, the previous pressurized structure deflated as a result of its primary power source and backup generators being flooded.

According to the Intrepid, the same Weeks Marine barge-mounted crane that was used to hoist Enterprise onto the flight deck last year is now being used to construct the new pavilion, which is about the same size as the original display structure.

Since receiving space shuttle Enterprise from NASA and the Smithsonian ? the latter had the orbiter on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Virginia annex to the National Air and Space Museum, until space shuttle Discovery took its place in April 2012 ? the Intrepid has applied for and received National Historic Place status for the test orbiter.

The museum also launched a dedicated artifacts exhibit, "Space Shuttle Enterprise: A Pioneer," to educate visitors about the history of the prototype spacecraft while its new pavilion is still under construction. The exhibition includes a crowd-sourced photo display of Enterprise's journey to New York City and the Intrepid, which documents in part the rise, fall and rise again of the space shuttle's home on board the aircraft carrier.

Trade School: Student Stock Pickers Need More ... - Yahoo! Finance

Beyond the sluggish economy and tight job market, one of the biggest challenges graduating college students face is finding something substantial to put on their slender resumes. This experience deficit has become increasingly problematic for business school grads, given the record number of MBA degree holders being pumped into the system each year and the reduced opportunities that exist.

But there may be hope, at least for the financially minded, thanks to the first-ever All-America Student Analyst Competition --a real-world, risk-adjusted contest that measures students' stock picking and portfolio management prowess over a four-month period.

"There are a lot of stock picking competitions that go on, but generally the winner is the person that has the best luck or puts all their money into a penny stock that goes up 4000%," says John Power, CEO of Mark My Media, the Connecticut-based firm that oversaw the trading tournament in conjunction with Institutional Investor.

As Power explains in the attached video, six different performance factors where used to add an element of professionalism and sophistication that's not normally found in these types of contests. It's a component he says is critical because it shows that students are not only "able to pick stocks, but to manage portfolios in an effective way."

"If I were to pick one thing that I noticed, it's that talent exists everywhere," Power says, and not just in the top-rated schools where you would expect to find tomorrow's superstar hedge fund managers.

All totaled, some 700 students from 34 different schools took part in the contest; an event, Power says, offers everyone the ''ability to build and verify their credentials and interactions with capital markets."

Ultimately, it boils down to time, money and jobs, since he says the price of hiring the wrong person can prove to be very costly.

"The cost of making a (recruiting) mistake is very expensive," he says, noting that the All American Student Analyst Competition "helps makes sure the right person is identified for the right seat."
