Tips for Developing Applications for Your Business | Computers and ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Dave Carter | Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:27 | Word Count: 568

Web applications are very useful for any business. Whether you are a large enterprise or small company, the advantages of creating applications to automate work for you outweigh the cost of creating them. You can create it to optimize your work, distribute communications better or even be a product that you sell. Needless to say, there are so many things that you can do with the right idea and the right programmers.?The following are some practical tips that can help you in development phase of your application project. They are simple reminders that can keep your grounded on your project and on-track.?Visualize your Process Flow?According to experts from R&G Technologies, one should never start a project without a working model and flowchart of how you want it to work. If you want to be able to create a program that is functional, make sure that you know where you want to start and what output you want to get. While there are many things that happen along the way, knowing where you are supposed to start and knowing the outcome will keep you focused toward completion.?Simplify the Steps?Make sure that you clarify the phases of your application?s development. Chokepoints happen when the steps are not clearly defined in your work. Specify what needs to be done, who needs to do it, and when it is due. Before you even step forward toward designing, make sure that this working framework is hashed out.?Work With the Budget? An application?s success largely depends on two things: time and money. If you do not have enough of either, there is a chance that your project will fail. It is critical that you work with your budget.Make sure that you have plenty of funds for all the aspects needed in the project. It is important that you also have an emergency fund available. Like extra time, extra money will allow you to account for things that you did not expect.?Create Your Own?While modeling is an important aspect of development, make sure that you are not caught in the trap of copying other people?s work. Innovate, think out of the box and explore other options. Don?t be limited by what is already available. While it may take a bit of time, it may prove to be your projects biggest selling point.?Document Changes? The strength of a program is often found in its documentation. It is, in some sense, what separates the ?men from the boys?. A program is often in flux in development. The best way to maker sure that you are able to manage this dynamism is proper documentation. It is critical that this is enforced properly even in the thick of the development. Make it a habit to check the logs of the programmers. It is what will ensure whether your project is doing what you planned it to do.?Support?Support is often an afterthought. Nevertheless, it is what makes great programs what they are. If you are planning to develop a program, make sure that you have the manpower to support it even after its launch date. ?Consider it the human aspect that ties in everything together.

    ?

Are you planning to create new applications for your company? Don?t where to start? Learn how to do it right with R&G Technologies.

STONESTREET WON BUT WHO ELSE WON?

Eric Stonestreet was the first Emmy winner of the night, and the first backstage at the trophy table, but the suspense was still killing him.

    ZOOEY NAILS IT

Zooey Deschanel played up her "adorkable" persona on the Emmy red carpet with a quirky, sparkly manicure featuring television sets on her thumbnails.

The silver, gold and black accessories were a huge hit on Twitter.

A photo of an (at)ZooeyDeschanel digit was retweeted 964 times and favorite 1,135 times as of this writing. They were the work of nail technician Tom Bachik (at)RedCarpetMan.

Glamour Fashion called it "the mani we've been waiting for!" The "New Girl" star, who was a presenter Sunday night, is famous for her red-carpet nail numbers.

A MAD MAN MOMENT IN EMMY LOBBY

It was life imitating art just off to the side of the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre entrance as "Mad Men" newbie Ben Feldman caught a smoke.

The resourceful first-time nominee discovered a corner tucked away from the scads of cameras and celebrities that was the perfect spot for a quick pre-show cigarette.

Unfortunately, there weren't any bottles of scotch nearby for him to wash it down with, but just inside the lobby of the Nokia Theatre attendees were lined up at the concession stand for $10 cocktails.

Feldman's "Mad Men" leading man Jon Hamm held court on the other side of the lobby, attracting a line of attendees who wanted a photo with the veteran nominee.

    ___

MOMS GOT THEIR DUE FROM THE RED CARPET

Moms weren't forgotten on the red carpet.

Rico Rodriguez, young star of "Modern Family," brought his mother as his date, presenting her to the world as "the beautiful ma-ma."

The pair were even featured in a prerecorded bit that tracked their progress in a limo from home to the Emmycast.

And earlier Stephen Colbert, while being interviewed with his wife at his side, took a moment to phone his 91-year-old mom on his cellphone to say hello.

"I've shouted at her 'We're on ABC!'" he told interviewer Josh Elliott.

    A RED CARPET PROPOSAL

One Emmy attendee used the red carpet for more than just walking ? he got down on one knee and proposed to his date.

Security initially tried to shoo him off, but saw him reaching into his pocket for a ring and let the moment happen. With throngs of people cheering, he presented the ring and received a kiss, and presumably an answer "Yes," as those nearby applauded the mystery couple.

    EVEN CELEBRITIES SWEAT

With temperatures topping 90 degrees on the Emmy red carpet, the stars were doing everything they could not to let you see them sweat.

"Dancing With the Stars" host Tom Bergeron sucked down a bottle of water as he walked the carpet. Others clutched hand fans and discreetly dabbed their brows as they made their way into the Nokia Theatre.

Ashley Judd of "Missing" went a different route, toting an umbrella as she sashayed between interviews.

    ___

    FROM 1 JIMMY TO ANOTHER

Jimmy Fallon is playing musical chairs at this year's Emmy Awards, in more ways than one.

The 2010 Emmy host, interviewed on the red carpet, noted he has passed hosting duties on to another Jimmy this year, name of Kimmel.

As a result, Fallon said, he doesn't even have a ticket to the 2012 show.

"But Clint Eastwood said he was going to save me a chair," Fallon cracked.

His advice to this year's Jimmy: "Don't make out with Betty White. There's cameras everywhere and you'll get caught. And definitely go to Honey Boo Boo's after-party, cause that's gonna be where it's at."

    ? Frazier Moore ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

    ____

SEEING STARS ON THE RED CARPET

At the Emmys there's the red carpet and then there's ? well ? the other red carpet.

As the main red carpet fills up, security tries to keep the line moving by directing the big stars down the carpet where cameras are lined up to film them and entertainment journalists are waiting to interview them.

Meantime, the less famous are directed down a parallel red carpet closer to the fan bleachers.

"Please continue walking," security guards continuously say.

Sometimes they'll also give a gentle nudge to someone on the B-list red carpet who lingers too long taking pictures of the folks on the A-List red carpet.

    ? Anthony McCartney ? Twitter http://twittter.com/mccartneyA

    ___

    QUICKQUOTE: JESSE TYLER FERGUSON

"It's so warm I thought a nice flannel tux would be appropriate." ? Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" on the Emmy red carpet.

    ___

    GETTING THE STARS' ATTENTION

"Jesse Jesse Jesse!" the crowd chants trying to get the attention of "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. He obliges with several waves to the bleacher crowd.

Before the first stream of stars arrived on the Emmy Red Carpet, a show producer told them to "make everything personal" if they wanted to get their attention.

It may take several chants, but the stars often answer with a wave, a smile or the occasional fist pump.

    ? Anthony McCartney ?Twitter http://twittter.com/mccartneyAP

    ___

KEEPING COOL IN THE FAN BLEACHERS

Fran and Elmer Armstrong are awards show veterans, joining throngs of fans for at least their sixth Emmy Awards Show on a sweltering Sunday afternoon.

The retired St. Louis couple's quest for a front row seat in the fan bleachers beside the red carpet began when they lined up outside the Nokia Theatre around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. As the day progressed, and temperatures rose, they hung in there, cheering as the cameras from E! Entertainment television filmed pre-show segments.

"Goodbye Giuliana," 70-year-old Elmer Armstrong shouted to anchor Giuliana Rancic as the E Entertainment crew wrapped up.

With temperatures topping 90 degrees, he and his 71-year-old wife were like many in the stands ? trying to keep cool with water and wet paper towels. At least this year's stands are shaded. Elmer Armstrong recalled one year when fans were forced to sit in the blazing sun.

That's not the only change to this year's fan seating ? a tall wall keeps fans from glad-handing or even getting autographs from cooperative celebrities.

Elmer Armstrong remains at the ready, however ? keeping his digital SLR camera and telephoto lens handy to get shots of the stars.

Opening act for Urbandale couple?s wedding: The Obama campaign

Sayli and Jon Gibbs wanted to get married at Living History Farms in Urbandale on Sept. 1. They couldn?t escape politics.

Sayli Gibbs made the wedding arrangements for the Urbandale couple about six months ahead of time, and everything was going smoothly until she heard from a Living History Farms employee that ?something big? was going to be happening on the same day as her wedding.

?I kind of just assumed it was going to be the president,? Gibbs said. ?That was the first thing I thought. A couple days later she called and she confirmed that it was president Obama that was coming.?

Gibbs learned that Obama would be holding a rally in the exact place her wedding was supposed to be.

Obama was scheduled to be done at 4 and her wedding wasn?t until 7, and Gibbs said she wasn?t worried until they actually reached the hotel across from Living History Farms and saw it blocked off.

?Of course there was tons of traffic and no one was allowed to get into the hotel parking lot or any other parking lot by Living History Farms,? Gibbs said. ?Secret Service just would not let anyone in.?

Gibbs said she and her bridesmaids had to carry her wedding dress, her suitcase and all her bridesmaids? clothes across Hickman Road in order to get ready.

Luckily for them, Obama?s rally kept to its schedule and they were able to set up in time.

?The wedding started on time, Obama was gone on time, and everything worked out,? Gibbs said.

Obama didn?t leave without acknowledging the couples? happy day, though. He left behind a parting gift with a personal touch.

?Jon knew about the gift ahead of time but he wanted it to be a surprise for me,? Gibbs said. ?At the reception, the event coordinator for Living History Farms came into the barn and she had a bag with the presidential seal on it. I was like ?no way.? ?

Inside the bag was a silver tray with the presidential seal and Obama?s engraved signature, as well as a handwritten note reading ?Congratulations on the wedding. Michelle and I wish you a great life together. Barack Obama.?

The bag also contained a julep cup with the same seal and engraved signature to match the tray.

?We?re not sure exactly what to do with it,? Gibbs said. ?It?s not displayed yet, but we are going to frame the note for sure and display that.?

Gibbs said the president?s gifts left an impression, but he hadn?t clinched her vote yet.

?The fact that he took the time to do that, I mean obviously he?s a busy guy, really showed his character, but I still haven?t decided who I?m going to vote for,? Gibbs said.

Chicago State Street Poetry Installation: That Great Street to Celebrate 100 Years of Poetry in Chicago.
    The road not taken.

CHICAGO, Tuesday, September 18, 2012. With no apologies to Robert Frost who decided to travel the road less taken, the Chicago Loop Alliance (CLA) has decided, instead, to travel the "road" in Chicago that is taken by more than 220,000 people each day.? The CLA, in partnership with the Poetry Foundation, announced today that it will be?infiltrating each side of State Street from Wacker Drive to Congress Parkway with visual and audio installations for its 100-year salute to poetry during the month of October.

The extensive installation will include audio poem excerpts from the likes of Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot and Wallace Stevens?and more contemporary writers, including former U. S. Poets Laureate Kay Ryan and Robert Hass, as well as local poets Reginald Gibbons and Li-Young Lee.

In addition, six more clusters will be added to Lightscape: A Multisensory Experience on State Street to create more poetry for passersby by using visual and sound density.

?We are thrilled to partner with the Poetry Foundation to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Poetry magazine,? said CLA Interim Executive Director Laura Jones. ?For Chicago Loop Alliance, the anniversary is an opportunity to introduce broad public audiences to the legacy of creative expression that Poetry represents. Poetry may be an international publication but, to us, it is above all a Chicago institution.?

So, all together now, sing out..."Roses are red, violets are blue" and October brings better poetry for you.

    Other Poetry Events for October.

Chicago Slam Works' will be presenting "Two Sides" this October at their new location at Raven Theatre. "Two Sides", directed by J.W. Basilo, will feature six storytellers paired with six poets to tell their true tales of childhood, heartbreak, aging and everything in between. Featured poets include Robert Brown, Kristiana Colon, Reggie Eldridge, Nate Olison, Britteney Black Rose, Tim Stafford, Dan "Sully" Sullivan and Jamila Woods. Storytellers are Cara Brigandi, Stephanie Douglass, Don Hall, Bill Hillmann, Paulette McDaniels, Deanna Moffitt, Luis Perez and Scott Whitehair. "Two Sides" will run Wednesday, October 10, October 17 and October 24 at 7:30 at 6157 N. Clark St.

What Is Labor Day jersey shore Pasquale Rotella Michael Clark Duncan michael jackson courtney stodden Ncaa Football Scores

    Conservatives Fret Romney Strategy

Believe them or not, post-convention polls such as the one out today from ABC News and the Washington Post show some wind - or maybe more accurately, a slight breeze - at President Obama's back.

The presidential race has gone from "deadlocked" to a slight edge for Obama since Labor Day.

A lot of ups and downs are expected between now and Election Day - with three debates, two jobs reports and more than 50 news cycles still to go - but Republican pundits have begun to fret that Mitt Romney can't continue to capitalize on the stubbornly weak economy.

"If the Republican Party cannot win in this environment, it has to get out of politics and find another business," declared George Will on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" Sunday.

Will was describing how the 8.1 percent unemployment rate belies the large numbers of Americans who have given up looking for work.

"If the work force participation rate today were what it was in June 2009, when the recovery began, we would have an unemployment rate of 11.2 percent," said Will. "If you add in the involuntarily unemployed, you're approaching 19 percent, which is why I should think, from here on in, on the basis of these numbers, the Romney campaign's slogan should be the title of Paul Krugman's book, which is 'End This Depression Now,' because these are depression-level numbers."

Conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham on Monday called 2012 a " gimme election " for Republicans. But she lamented a lack of strong branding in the Romney campaign's message.

"And if you're Mitt Romney, with all of your expertise and all of your knowledge about how the economy works, and you're in this, you have one shot, man. This is going to be the first line of your obituary: You won or you lost. It's all on the line for the country, and it's all on the line for you," Ingraham said.

Other conservatives have joined in, albeit expressing less overt frustration than Will and Ingraham.

" Speak Up, Mitt! " is the title of a piece by William Kristol in a forthcoming issue of the Weekly Standard.

The Wall Street Journal's editorial page wrote Monday that "The GOP candidate might try explaining his policies. Just a thought."

The editorial baord was perturbed at Romney's answer to a question on "Meet the Press" about a forthcoming ban on denying health insurance to those who have pre-existing conditions. Romney opposed the ban when Democrats passed it into law, but he seemed to have difficulty explaining why. And he even suggested he'd keep part of Obama's health care law, although he didn't specify how he'd do that.

"Mr. Romney's pre-existing political calculation seems to be that he can win the election without having to explain the economic moment or even his own policies. As this flap shows, such vagueness carries its own political risks," wrote the Journal's editorial board.

Read more About Romney on Pre-existing Conditions

Not all conservatives are quite so edgy, though. The National Review has come out with a calmingly reassuring editorial headline: " Fear Not the Bounce "

But it includes this scathing critique of the Republican's late-summer strategy:

"The Democrats, it seems to us, made better use of their convention than the Republicans made of theirs. The Republican message, especially in the most-watched addresses, seemed less coordinated, deliberate and focused. Republicans spent too much time explaining what a nice guy Romney is and how happy he is about female empowerment, and not enough time explaining how he would improve the national condition."

The conclusion that Romney remains "in the hunt" is not news. A slight Obama lead by no means spells the end of the race. But the conventional wisdom among increasingly alarmed and vocal D.C. conservative thinkers is that team Romney needs to refocus and find a way to draw a starker contrast between him and President Obama, and zero in even more intently on the economy.

Matchups to watch: Florida vs. Texas A&M

? Texas A&M OTs Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews vs. Florida DEs Lerentee McCray and Dominique Easley
The Gators feature fast, athletic ends that will provide a test for Joeckel and Matthews, considered one of the nations best tackle tandems. Joeckel, the Aggies' 6-foot-6, 310-pound left tackle, will match up against McCray (6-foot-3, 249) while Matthews (6-foot-5, 305) at right tackle will face Easley (6-foot-2, 280).

? Florida DT Sharrif Floyd vs. Texas A&M LG Jarvis Harrison and C Patrick Lewis
Floyd, a 6-foot-3, 303-pound junior, has the size, athleticism and is a load to handle. He was disruptive in the Gators' opener against Bowling Green with 1.5 tackles for loss and consistently pushed interior linemen back. He'll match up against Harrison, a 6-foot-3, 320 sophomore, in some instances and in others, he will line up on the football vs. Lewis (6-foot-2, 312), the senior. How Floyd responds to the fast tempo the Aggies' will run on offense will be worth watching.

? Texas A&M RB Christine Michael vs. Florida MLB Jon Bostic
The 6-foot-1, 246 pound Bostic is a playmaker and led the Gators with eight tackles last week, including five solos and a tackle for loss. Michael is at full strength after a knee injury shortened his junior season but the 5-foot-11, 220-pounder can run in between the tackles as well as on the edges and has been improving his pass-catching ability. Many assume Kevin Sumlin and Kliff Kingsbury's offense is pass-happy, but if the Aggies don't run the ball well, it will make things tougher on them.

? Florida TE Jordan Reed vs. Texas A&M LB Sean Porter and S Steven Campbell
Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mark Snyder was highly complimentary of Reed, a 6-foot-3, 243-pound junior who caught three passes for 33 yards last week, calling Reed a threat. A pair of seniors in Porter, the strongside linebacker and Campbell at safety will likely draw the chance to match up with Reed. Both Porter and Campbell are talented veterans who are impact players themselves.

? Florida WRs Frankie Hammond, Jr. and Quinton Dunbar vs. Texas A&M CBs Deshazor Everett and De'Vante Harris
Snyder also said the Gators receivers "can all fly," referring to their speed. Hammond, a senior and Dunbar, a redshirt sophomore will test a pair of young Aggie cornerbacks. Everett, a sophomore, is making his first career start after spending last year as a reserve and special teams player while Harris, a true freshman, will be playing his first career game. Both have impressed the A&M coaching staff in fall camp.

Google's stock tops $700 for first time since 2007

Click chart for more on Google's stock

Just days after Google (GOOG) turned 14, shares topped the $700 mark for the first time since 2007. Shares hit a new 52-week high of $712.25 Friday. That's less than 5% below its all-time high of a little more than $747.

The stock may have lagged the broader tech market during the past five years, but it seems to be hitting a growth spurt in its teen years. Shares have spiked 11% in the past month. That's not too bad for a youngster.

Take a look at some of its competitors. Facebook (FB), for example, has had one of the toughest starts as a public company. Its stock has dropped 7% over the past month and, at $19, it's way below its IPO price. Still, the one bright spot for the social network is the fact that its shares are still valued at a whopping 36 times earnings forecasts. And Yahoo (YHOO), which is hoping its turnaround story has just begun, has declined 6% over the past month.

Ultimately, Google's slow and steady moves look like they're paying off. Analysts are forecasting Google's earnings per share to jump 18% this year, and 16%, on average, over the next few years. At 16 times 2012 earnings forecasts, the stock is pretty fairly priced.

Related: Google at 14: Better than ever

It's not like Google doesn't face any headwinds. Apple's (AAPL) big courtroom victory over Samsung could prove problematic since Samsung is the biggest Android user and if Apple continues to wage a war against Android, Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility could wind up being a costly mistake. Earlier this week, Google's Motorola division unveiled three new smartphones that it claims will give Apple's iPhone 4S a run for its money.

Speaking of money, Google likes to spend and occasionally manages to make bets that don't pan out as well as hoped.

Still, Google's trio of leaders, CEO Larry Page, fellow co-founder Sergey Brin, and chairman Eric Schmidt, have steered the ship pretty well.

State Department to induct 1st American Chef Corps

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton believes in the power of food. Over more than three years as America's top diplomat, she has increasingly used cuisine as a tool to bring people together.

Now Clinton is enlisting top-rated chefs from across the nation to join an effort to forge cultural exchanges over the dining table worldwide.

On Friday, more than 80 chefs are being inducted into the first American Chef Corps. These food experts could help the State Department prepare meals for visiting dignitaries, travel to U.S. embassies abroad for educational programs with foreign audiences or host culinary experts from around the world in their U.S. kitchens.

This month, chefs and food experts from 25 countries are visiting Washington, New York, San Francisco, the Midwest and New Orleans to learn about U.S. food culture in a State Department program.

The new Diplomatic Culinary Partnership is part of Clinton's "smart power" philosophy of using "every diplomatic tool at our disposal," said U.S. Chief of Protocol Capricia Penavic Marshall, in a written response to questions from The Associated Press.

Clinton's focus on the role of food in person-to-person diplomacy began when she was first lady and Marshall served as White House social secretary.

Gone is a heavy reliance on French fare or catering menus to serve special guests.

At a February luncheon for Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Marshall called on Chinese-American chef Ming Tsai, who owns the Wellesley, Mass., restaurant Blue Ginger. He created a special menu fusing Chinese and American cultures that included an "eight treasured rice packet" with a variety of flavors and gingered Swiss chard.

To feed British Prime Minister David Cameron in March, diplomats chose Chef April Bloomfield, owner of New York's Spotted Pig, who was born in Britain. The menu included slow-cooked Atlantic salmon, herbed lentils, roasted fennel, cauliflower and petite carrots.

"By showcasing the best of American cuisine and creativity, we can show our guests a bit about ourselves," Marshall said. "Likewise, by incorporating elements of our visitor's culture, we can demonstrate respect and a desire to connect and engage."

The State Department also offers snacks or tea to jet-lagged guests with a flavor from their homes to make them comfortable.

Chefs who have prepared a diplomatic meal or special program are being anointed State Chefs, a distinction that comes with a navy jacket with the American flag and their names embroidered in gold. The roster includes Ming, Bloomfield and famed Washington-area chef Jose Andres, who cooked for the 50th anniversary of the department's Diplomatic Reception Rooms.

Food can send a message, Andres said, so he served dignitaries Louisiana Gulf shrimp to send a signal of support to fishermen struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina. He said showcasing the nation's diverse offerings also shows that America "is more than just hot dogs and burgers."

Other big names being enlisted include Bryan Voltaggio, a Maryland chef and runner up on TV's "Top Chef" who prepared dinner for Japan's prime minister, and Rick Bayless of Chicago who cooked President Barack Obama's second state dinner for the Mexican president.

Washington Chef Mike Isabella, who gained fame on TV's "Top Chef," is the first new State Chef to formally represent America's food culture abroad. He's visiting Greece and Turkey on a trip he planned to research flavors for an upcoming restaurant.

For Clinton, he added visits to embassies and restaurants as a culinary ambassador. Isabella has met chefs in Greece and Turkey who want to know more about U.S. advances in moving food from farm to table and building stronger businesses.

"I just think food is the best way to bring people together," he said. "Even if we don't understand what we're saying across the table from each other, we understand how happy we are when we're sitting down together."

Amazon intros Kindle Serials: buy once, get them all

Amazon intros Kindle Serials buy once, get them all

Amazon isn't content to limit its attention to hardware today. It just introduced Kindle Serials, a way of consuming a steady stream of content: buy once and you get all future issues of a text, with new segments appended to the old as they arrive. Only eight titles are available to start, but Amazon is promising a modern take on history by offering Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and The Pickwick Papers for free, serialized the way they were many decades ago. Episodes will cost $1.99 a pop, which makes them tempting for readers who just want a small literary snack -- and authors that want to start seeing income in weeks rather than months or years.
